American bombers raided Paramushiro in the Kuriles last Sunday sinking an enemy patrol vessel and badly damaging another. Navy Liberators hit a medium flanker, and search planes attacked shipping near Paramushiro, bombing a large cargo ship at Suribachi and damaging a patrol vessel. One Navy Ventura was damaged engaging three enemy fighters.
Representative Alfred L Bulwinkle of North Carolina concluded a 24 day 11 000 mile aviation trip saying Alaska needs transportation facilities for future development with great possibilities He called Alaska one of the great gateways of international aviation commerce with Siberia and the Orient Bulwinkle who chairs the House Aviation Committee led a delegation that visited eight US states Canada and Alaska urging continued production to maintain world air commerce and national air defense prospects
After a summer break the Martha Society resumes tomorrow at 1 30 PM in the parlors of Northern Light Presbyterian Church. Hostesses Mrs Delbert Dixon and Mrs George Andy Baker will welcome members for an afternoon gathering.
News from Seattle reports the sudden death of Josia Goodwin father of Mrs John B Halm formerly of Juneau. He was well known and had many friends in this city from a visit here years ago. Mr and Mrs Halm left Juneau last spring for the states and recently settled at Ket chikan.
Donations for the CDA rummage sale are to be taken to the vacant building on Franklin Street between Third and Fourth after 11 o'clock tomorrow morning. Large items can be picked up by calling Blue 520. Mrs. Harry Pike checked in at the Juneau Hotel from Anchor age.
On August 30 the Adriatic port of Pesaro was captured by Polish and Allied troops advancing from the Foglia River in a broad front. Allied forces moved inland past strong German positions while Urbina fell and a five mile push through the Appennines continued. The Fifth Army rout in the west remained unchanged.
American forces advancing up the Rhone Valley occupied Valence as French troops entered Montpellier. Beziers and Narbonne reported punched through, Narbonne about 60 miles from the Spanish border. German Nineteenth Army moved north toward Lyon while Seventh Army pressed from Nice toward the Italian frontier.
The Fish and Wildlife Service will keep the game license office open until 6 p.m. tonight and all day Saturday to serve hunters who could not reach the office before closing. Licenses allow hunting deer, moose, grouse and ptarmigan during the open season and may be purchased on the fourth floor of the Federal Building with special elevator service for convenience.
Berlin acknowledged a revolutionary movement in Slovakia with garrisons deserting. The DNB cited riots at several sites linked to Partisans and Tito's Yugoslavia, describing outbreaks as Bolshevist terror with murders of priests and assaults on women.

Frank Heintzleman flew to Ketchikan today to confer with Crown-Zellerbach Paper Corporation representatives about the large pulp mill unit the Forest Service is blocking for inspection by potential buyers. He is expected to return within a week. A sewing club news entry follows mentioning the Stitch and Chatter 4-H Club meeting at Juaniit Die's home at 7 o'clock.
Territorial War Finance Committee announces Jack Fletcher will head the Volunteer War Finance Committee of Gastineau Channel. He succeeds resignation by Mrs. John McCormick, with Fletcher to lead fundraising and support for wartime efforts.
The twenty fifth annual convention of the Alaska Department American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary begins Saturday in Juneau continuing through Monday with a grand ball in the Elks Ballroom. Officers will be elected and business conducted. An entertainment program includes a mixer and a Grand Promenade and banquet. delegates from South Alaska including Ketchikan attend.
Delegates from Petersburg Sitka Skagway Kodiak Palmer Anchorage Valdez Cordova An draska Seward Fairbanks and others represent the westward and interior posts for this convention. Southeast delegates arrive today or Saturday as three days of sessions begin. Juneau Post and Auxiliary promise a memorable visit with a full program from September 1 through September 4 including meetings, greetings, meals, tours, and a grand ball.
H R Shepard, 80, longtime Juneau pioneer, died this morning in Fresno California where he had resided the past year. He left Juneau three years ago and lived with his daughter Mrs B B Neitling before moving to California. He is survived by two sons Royal of Presno and J G Shepard of Juneau now in Nome. The Elks Lodge in Juneau, of which he was a charter member, received the death notice.
Allied forces claim Amiens captured after a rapid 48 hour advance across the Somme, with British and Canadian units overrunning German positions. The push reaches the Meuse region while American columns move toward the German frontier, signaling a collapse of German resistance on the open front. British and Canadian troops push to Rowen and Abbeville, with St Oivier and Vitry advances nearing the Maginot Line area.
