Athens reports rapid diplomatic shifts as Greece nears abandoning neutrality and joining the European struggle on the Entente side within 48 hours. Staff officers summoned. the king to convene conferences with French, British, and Russian ministers.
Nine Hungarian towns and villages, including four with populations above six thousand, plus Kronstadt, have fallen to the Roumanians in the first three days of their invasion of the Transylvanian Alps. Austrian forces are retreating from Transylvania's southern frontier.
The government of Constantinople formally declares war on Roumania, escalating regional tensions as the state states its wartime stance.

The crew of the Zeppelin fled after it was shot down.
Kansas City Missouri reports a strike on coal miners across Kansas Missouri Oklahoma and Arkansas was averted. A six clause dispute was settled by the miners and operators subcommittee, allowing 35,000 workers to remain at work and signaling possible higher coal prices.
Seattle Aug 34 The steam er Alaska sails tonight at seven carrying over 125 passengers bound for Juneau. Several passengers bound for Juneau had reservations on the Humboldt but will sail Alaska instead as Humboldt delays several days.
Stephen A. Cowley of Great Falls via Western Democratic headquarters says Montana will vote to reelect Wilson. He reports wide Democratic unity and favorable conditions after touring the state. Cowley believes the party is solid and that prior opposition trips did not aid any rival.
The House passed a bill authorizing Juneau to vote 75000 in school bonds and sent it to the President for signature. Councilman King HH King welcomed the news after arriving in Washington on the Alameda. The measure moved swiftly through Senate and House with support from Senator Pittman and others.

Alameda was in port this morning, board westward.
Skagway reports Yukon territorywide election results show a wet victory with 71 precincts counted and a 57 vote margin. Dawson tallies 343 wets to 265 dry while Whitehorse records 89 wets to 72 dry. several outlying precincts remain due.
Waterville Maine August 31 Secretary of War Newton D Barker delivered a vigorous endorsement of the administration's European policy at a Democratic campaign meeting. He praised President Wilson's domestic program as beneficial and consistent, urging that future policy be guided by proven leadership and avoid foreign interference.
Newell Perkins was instantly killed and his father George Perkins badly hurt when a passenger train on the Salt Lake & Ogden electric railroad struck an auto loaded with dynamite they were riding in, a few miles north of Salt Lake City. The truck was demolished and dynamite scattered widely, but none exploded.
A special Jitney Dance will be held in celebration of Labor Day at ALR halley Camp Juneau No 232 Arctic Brotherhood. The dances by the Brotherhood have proven very popular.
Seattle August 31 seven steel steamers will join the Alaska Steamship Co fleet. Three will replace the Jefferson, Dolphin, and Dora, built outright in Seattle, and four more will be added for Alaska service purchased. Plans call for one 170 foot vessel with 60 passenger accommodations and 500 tons freight, plus two 60 foot ships with fast turbines for excursion and coastal service. John He Brich will depart for New York to arrange the additions.
In Seattle on August 31 two hundred fifty gallons of whiskey consigned by the Leavitt Company of San Francisco in care of the King Transfer Company were seized by police this morning and poured into the sewer.
Santa Fe August 31 Frank A Hubbell was unanimously nominated to succeed United States Senator Thomas B Catron by the state Republican convention.

Washington August 31. Railroad Brotherhood officials through Mr Garretson agree to call off the strike based on the eight hour day bill already approved by the President and House leaders. The measure, introduced by Representative Adamson, is to be sent to the Senate tomorrow. The Brotherhood of Railroad Men statement says enactment into law of Wilsons eight hour day bill, while preserving ten hour wages, will settle the dispute if made law before Saturday night to allow 24 hours to cancel the strike order.
Washington August 31 The Senate interstate committee opened hearings on proposed legislation to prevent a strike if Congress adopts measures Chairman Francis G Newlands warned a strike could threaten the nation calling it possibly civil war He urged railroad heads and unions to seek a fair remedy and allow careful action Garretson head of the Brotherhood of Conductors spoke urging an eight hour compromise to avert a strike Railroad interests and labor leaders including Samuel Gompers and Warren Stone were slated to testify
