The Civil Aeronautics Board found the probable cause of a fatal Air Transport Associates crash near Seattle on July 19, 1949, to be the pilot's indecision during takeoff after loss of left engine power, likely due to 91 octane gasoline. Government regulations require 100 octane fuel.
Drew Pearson reports Washington officials including U S Attorney Morris Fay and assistant Fidelly faced wire tapping probes. A police lieutenant accused of Russian methods was vacationing at Nags Head when investigators began in August last year. A tip from Fay’s office tipped off Shimon, who rushed back to Washington. The Raleigh Hotel meeting with Fidelly disclosed the probe, suggesting bias in the U S Attorney’s office during the case. Meanwhile, a fall promotion offers cut-rate fares for Alaskans southbound after the tourist season, on roundtrip tickets. A company spokesman quipped that rates rise for fish but fall for people.
Nora Waln novelist and Saturday Evening Post correspondent at a Korean airport slipped stepping from a plane and dislocated an arm. The incident occurred on August 30 and reports identify her as a casualty of the day.

The House approved a bill to spotlight Communist activities by a 354 to 20 vote, sending the measure to the Senate. It bars Communist or front members from government or defense jobs and follows Mundt Nixon precedents with new un-American activities provisions. Only two Republicans and 17 Democrats opposed, joined by Rep. Marcantonio.
A lightning bolt traveled 430 feet along an underground wire and triggered five dynamite charges, killing two miners. Harvey Reiner, 32, of Donaldson Pennsylvania, and Harry Hartz, 35, of Tremont, were working in an independent mine when the accident occurred. The explosion occurred in their faces.
Mr and Mrs H Dedman of Skagway are stopping at the Baranoff hotel during their Alaska trip, with plans to tour local sights and dine in town. The couple is reported to be enjoying warm hospitality and preparing for continued travel along the coast.

Temperatures in Juneau and at the airport reached a high in the low 50s with nightly lows near 47 to 48 degrees. Variable cloudiness is forecast for tonight and Thursday with the lowest near 50 and a high near 60. Rainfall in the past 24 hours totaled 0.69 inches in Juneau city and 0.10 inches at the airport.

Malik, finishing his month as president, signals he will remain to push for a Red China seat while using strong propaganda. Taft condemns the administration over plans against World War III and urges rearming Western Europe. Veterans groups push to discharge Acheson and Secretary Johnson.
Landings made today include the Lone Fisherman piloted by Clarence May with 15 000 pounds of salmon for Eng strom Brothers, the Cameo with Elmer Lindstrom delivering 2 000 pounds, and the Glendale with Carl Jensen delivering 2 000 pounds, both for E. C. Johnson. The Don-Dee skipped by Fred Newman yielded 2 000 pounds for Alaska Coast Fisheries.
The body of Joan E. Haines, 65, a cook aboard the vessel Aquino, died Wednesday at St. Ann's Hospital. The remains are at Charles W. Carter Mortuary awaiting word from Mrs. Haines of 5808 Fifth Ave. N. W., Seattle. He was brought to Juneau Tuesday after a sudden heart attack.

In Alaska at Ladd and Erialson Air Force Bases during broad scale drills Brig Gen David H Baker reports a simulated aerial armada was forced to land. The exercise dubbed Dutch door involved a half hour dogfight and no shots were fired as 32 planes surrendered at Ladd. Umpires will tally results to name best defense against imagined enemy attacks in Alaska.
Last week's storm sank the fish packer Vermay and caused widespread damage to Southeast Alaska traps. W. C. Arnold of Alaska Salmon Industry Inc. said a dozen traps were destroyed and about half the traps in the area were inoperative. Repairs are underway ahead of the season’s close Saturday night.
Forty thousand Communist troops hammer northern defenses in South Korea in ferocious battles around Pohang and Yihung while U S forces contest ground along the Naktong River. Allied units hold Pohang but lose Kigye as US First Cavalry drives up Naktong heights amid heavy artillery. Negro troops and South Korean units repel six attacks on the southern front. Subok Mountain again changes hands in a day long fight.
