A Produce Workers Union strike halted operations of Washington Commission Company at 1113 Western Avenue Seattle threatening fresh food supplies to Alaska. The wage dispute risks spreading to other Seattle commission firms and could disrupt shipments before Labor Day.
Howard Lyng, Democratic member of the last Legislature from Nome and now assistant manager of the Alaska Rural Rehabilitation Corporation, says in a signed Anchorage Times interview that construction at the Matanuska Colonization Project is about halfway done with 35 houses occupied and 70 more under construction. He argues greater use of Alaskan labor under qualified local supervision would hasten completion, notes a 200-worker labor boost from Anchorage, Seward, and Fairbanks, and warns the federal project risks repeating mistakes by transporting workers from afar at low wages.
Stocks held steady amid light Labor Day trading with several specialties advancing. Alaska Juneau mine at 16 44, American Can 138, GM 42, Bethlehem Steel 37, U S Steel 43942, Kennecott 23, Schenley 34 14, Dow Jones industrials 127.35, rails 34.92, utilities 25.20.
San Francisco August 30 report shows fur sales rising 105 percent in July over the same month last year, leading all other merchandise lines in the Pacific Coast department store trade.

He will return via Seward by railroad after about ten days. Accompanying him are G L Proffitt and E L Bartlett. miss Harpster travels to Tanana aboard plane.
Archie W. Shiels, Juneau visitor and president of Pacific American Fisheries, Inc., says Southeast Alaska salmon pack this season is very satisfactory, with Ketchikan and Petersburg runs strong though Icy Straits weaker. He arrives from Seattle via the Yukon and will depart to Vancouver after meetings with Gov. Troy and H. L. Faulkner, planning a possible second visit later.
Alex Holden and 8S. E. Robbins of PAA report a near level field one mile below Mary Joyce's Twin Glaciers Lodge along the Taku River as an economical landing site for Interior planes when Juneau weather blocks the local field, avoiding Whitehorse.
The ashes of Ray Long, magazine editor and publisher who died by suicide on July 9, were scattered over the Pacific today. Peter Kyne, Ray Howard, and Long's 9 year old son Ray Jr. placed the ashes in a launch and delivered them to the waters off Los Angeles.

Washington reports 200000 fewer people employed on relief jobs than six months ago. Relief officials confirm the drop and note that with the New York relief program accelerating, Administrator Frank L. Hopkins aims to reach 3500000 at work by November.
Corey Ford and Alistair New York authors, joined by Clarence Rhodes, depart New York by boat to I Beach and Tee Harbor for a final Alaskan fishing day. They plan strip fishing and fly work, hoping for a last outing before winter claims their typewriters. The trio sails Saturday on the Canadian liner Rupert.
Cecil Allen, last racer to depart from Bendix Air Trophy contest to Cleveland, died instantly when his Gee Bee monoplane crashed a mile from the Los Angeles airport. He was a noted trans Pacific flyer. In Tacoma he once received a heroes welcome after returning from Tokyo with Dan Moyle aboard John Buffel’s plane.
Pacific Alaska Airways suspends all Southeast Alaska schedules and ends mid week service to Fairbanks. Ray Stuart of Ketchikan made the last Southeast flight. Weekly Lockheed Electra service to Fairbanks now departs Juneau Sundays at noon and returns Tuesday. Departure hour moved from 3 to 12 noon due to shorter daylight.
Rev. John H. McCummiskey of Mollywood is in Ketchikan to substitute for Father Buckley at the Catholic Church during the latter's vacation in the States.
Governor received a telegram from Nels Anderson stating Alaska projects under the work relief program are exempt from the standard wage schedule. wages will be set by the supervising agency based on local conditions, allowing higher pay than the $40 per month minimum common in the states. Officials argued the $40 wage is insufficient given higher living costs in Alaska.
The Reconstruction Finance Corporation received bids on the 14.5 million dollar Public Works Administration bonds as the Treasury faced its first bond offering failure in history. Officials, including Treasury leaders and banking spokesmen, asserted that federal credit remains sound and borrowing capacity unimpaired despite the setback.
Henri Barbussa, French pacifist and writer, died in the Kremlin Moscow after a sudden pneumonia attack. Soviet specialists failed to save him. he was esteemed by Communists and held an honorary post in the Red Army.
In Yazoc City Mississippi on August 30 the Roosevelt mended AAA tax provisions were declared constitutional and held to be collectable by a Federal Court decision.
Sheldon Simmons arrived shortly after 9 this morning from a round trip to Seattle and left Juneau at noon with Joe Meherin Hills Brothers representative and N A McEachran Schwabacher Brothers on a chartered flight to Haines and Skagway. Meherin and McEachran will spend about hours at each port to transact business and will return to Juneau tonight.

Norma Talmadge, famed actress, screamed to foil a presumed robo kidnap attempt. A man with a small box pointed a gun at the maid, warned silence, but fled when she screamed, dropping the empty box.
P. R. Bradley, president of the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Company, is back in St. Ann's Hospital for precautionary treatment of an infected foot. He arrived from Seattle, was treated August 20 to 23, then reentered August 27 after partial recovery.

Washington August 30 After a conference with President Roosevelt Alaska Delegate Anthony J Dimond said little likelihood exists for building the Alaska portion of the proposed International Highway until Canada is prepared The delegate added that survey work may begin in the territory regardless of Canadian position and that formal discussions with Canadian officials may be months away.
WASHINGTON Aug 30 Scarface A Capone now inmate at Alcatraz has been assessed nearly 120000 dollars for unpaid liquor taxes. Treasury orders him charged with illegal manufacture distribution and sale of 20000 barrels of beer. Treasury will pursue collection in civil court. Capone serves time for income tax evasion.
Stores will be closed all day Monday. Merchants ask shoppers to place orders early tomorrow forenoon and to shop late in the evening.
