Joseph Seymour Morgan, Alaska pioneer and longtime Juneau resident, died in a San Diego hospital after months of serious illness. He was born October 6, 1864 in Darlington Beach Indiana and moved to Missouri before relocating to Alaska in 1897. Morgan prospected, built mills, worked in surface mining, and later organized a transfer company in Juneau before leaving Alaska with his wife in 1924.

In Chicago on August 30, 15 year old Anna Masette fired a pistol in an attempt to protect her mother Jennie 38 from beating by her father James. One bullet hit Jennie in the heart and four struck James who died later. Maretta died at the hospital this afternoon.
