London reports estimate German losses since the war began exceed two million, possibly three, signifying rapid depletion of manpower. Western front captures by Entente forces near 120,000 prisoners and 2,000 heavy artillery pieces since July 18, with British forces taking over 20,000 prisoners August 21–26 while overall British casualties remain modest.

Memphis fire crews battled a blaze that destroyed three major stores in the retail shopping district last night. Fire officials reported significant damage to the storefronts and said investigations into the cause are underway. Local authorities closed several blocks as firefighters contained the flames. No injuries were immediately reported.

Washington Aug 30 The House approved the conference report on the administration man power bill. The Senate adjourned without action and the President's signature was expected tonight. Two naval aviators, James Churchill of Syracuse New York and Dewitt Wilcox of Newton Center Massachusetts, were killed in a fall at a Florida field.
London Aug 30 Admiral von Hintze German Foreign Minister will address the Prussian Diet foreign committee Monday. Chancellor von Hertling has returned from Berlin and peace propaganda is expected to continue.
Government forces completed an intensive roundup in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas, seizing 468 stills and arresting 200 operators. Two sheriffs and five outlaws died, many wounded, as more than 30,000 gallons of pale moonshine were seized and poured away. Copper value and distilling paraphernalia totaled over 100,000 dollars. Automobiles, horses, mules, wagons, and 1,000 pounds of sugar—destined for the Red Cross—were also seized.
Gustaf A. Sanquist of Cleveland and Rhinehart W. Kriegel of Buckley Washington were drowned while attached to the radio construction headwaters in France. They were reported from Washington on August 30.
William Duncan popularly known as Father Duncan, aged 86, died at Metlakatla Alaska from apoplexy just after midnight. Veteran missionary of sixty years, born in Beverly England, he founded Metlakatla settlement after relocating from British Columbia. His work guided the Kech一家 natives toward civil society with church and government backing.
Federal Judge Landis denied a new trial motion for 100 I W W members convicted of conspiring to interfere with the Government during wartime. In New York, sixteen National Civic Liberties Bureau members sued Postmaster Patten to force mail delivery of pamphlets critical of the war and the Government in actions against I W W members.
