Secretary Daniels told a Charleston audience that the United States fights for democracy and for German Empire people, faulting delayed war readiness and urging rapid construction of armor plate and projectile facilities to avert continued inadequacy in national defense.
Twenty five thousand New York State National Guardsmen marched down Fifth Avenue this afternoon bound for a South Carolina training camp. Two million people cheered the soldiers as they passed.
Week ending last night reports British submarines sinking eighteen vessels over 1600 tons and five under that tonnage. Italian losses include one large, two small steamers and two small sailing vessels. Canada enacts conscription for ages 20 to 45 at midnight. Paris August 30 Albert Metin undersecretary for finance is named under secretary of foreign affairs in charge of blockade. He will replace Baron Denys Coch who resigned weeks ago. Metin previously served as minister of labor in the Doumegue cabinet in 1913 and Briand cabinet in 1915.
The Chamber of Commerce of the United States issued a nationwide appeal urging coal consumers to cut fuel use as a distinct war measure. The message was sent to all regions today to support wartime efforts.
Supreme Court rules a Snohomish County seizure of a carload of whiskey bound for Ketchikan Alaska from Butte Montana was unlawful. The through bill of lading shipment was intercepted while on a train to Seattle after a leakage attracted attention. The consignee lost suit and appealed, with the high court’s decision affirming the unlawful act.
London August 30 The first British government standardized merchant steamer to replace tonnage lost through submarine warfare was commissioned today after successful trial trips. The keel was laid in February, launched last June, and placed in service. Six types of these freight vessels from 8000 tons downward are being built, with hundreds more planned by the government.
Joe Kelly, once in Juneau business, now in Seattle, asked the Red Cross to help find his wife Julia Robinski Kelly who left five weeks ago to visit friends in Seattle. He believes she may be unaware of his location and now resides in Seattle.
G Bereford, a forty year old ship's butcher aboard the Admiral Watson, jumped from the west end of Storm Island in Queen Charlotte Sound early last Monday night and drowned. The body was recovered in Seattle and no reason for the act is known.
Copenhagen Aug 30 A vessel near here reports twenty eight armed German trawlers steaming through the Baltic accompanied by a fleet of Zeppelins marking a bold show of naval air power amid wartime tensions reported by observers in the Danish capital.
Verdun August 30 President Poincare personally presented General Petain with the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor in a vast square amid thousands of troops and nearby aeroplanes. After the ceremony Poincare returned to Paris while Petain proceeded along the front directing artillery movements.
Paris reports a violent artillery engagement progressing on the Verdun front between Avoncourt and Hill 304 and on the Aisne front north of Curier's woods. German reconnaissance forces in the Verdun sector have been repulsed.
Rome reports Italian troops push along the Bainsizza plateau and reach the Austrian defensive line beyond Gorizia. Official dispatches claim gains on the heights with over a thousand Austrians captured in the day’s fighting.
Paris reports that artillerymen outnumber infantry along the Verdun front in recent operations. The gun crews focus on breaking ground, using gas shells as a major tool in the push.
Rome reports indicate Austrian forces are gradually defeated at all points on the Gorizia front. Counter attacks have been repulsed easily, according to official statements this afternoon.

Lausanne August 30 Swiss papers focus on Grand Duchess Anastasia von Mecklenburg mother in law of German Crown Prince. Reports say she invested much of the Kaiser's and Crown Prince's fortunes in Swiss securities. Duchess says German food situation is serious but not hopeless.
The government announces Alaska's gold production for 1916 reached sixteen million one hundred twenty five thousand dollars in value.
The American schooner Laura C. Anderson, 960 tons, was sunk by bombs fired from a German submarine. The crew escaped and landed at an English port.
Farmers nationwide hold wheat in warehouses or sacks awaiting government price fixing. Alaska faces a big seasonal stock need as winter supply must be bought and shipped. The 1917 crop valuation agreement was reached and will be reported to President Wilson for final decision by him.
In Christiania on August 30 the first Norwegian iron and concrete vessel was launched at the Polgrun Cement Works. Prime Minister Knudson attended the ceremony as the project showcased breakthrough construction in maritime engineering.

One hundred forty two soldiers of the Twenty fourth Infantry U S A arrived from Columbus last night under guard and were moved from a special train to the military stockade at Fort Bliss in El Paso August 30.
