About 100 CIO United Steelworkers walked off the job at Youngstown Sheet and Tube Campbell works after Senator Robert Taft toured the plant. Operations halted for two hours as 1,500 employees were idled. Taft waved and spoke briefly with workers but gave no speech amid boos and catcalls.
The CIO executive board expelled the West Coast Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union led by Harry Bridges and the Marine Cooks and Stewards headed by Hugh Bryson for Communist-aligned policies. Bridges' and Bryson's unions voted 41 to 2 and 41 to 1 respectively. The action, supported by a three-member committee, also ousted the Fishermen and Allied Workers led by Joseph Jurich. Bridges, free on bail pending a perjury appeal, faced no defense. the CIO began cleansing unions suspected of Communist ties ten months earlier in Cleveland.

President Truman issues a formal letter to General Douglas MacArthur clarifying U.S. policy on Formosa and praising his leadership in Korea. The move follows his earlier directive to withdraw a Formosa statement, aiming to align MacArthur and bolster his Far East prestige.
The Republican National Committee accuses the Administration policy in Korea Formosa and China of producing a boomerang effect. A 20 000 word white paper given to Republican candidates claims the policy failed and Republicans were not consulted on Far East decisions.

Forecast calls for variable clouds and a few showers tonight and Wednesday with little temperature change. City and airport precipitation totals show modest rainfall in the past 24 hours and larger totals since the July and August reference dates.
Coast Guard board heard the freighter Mary Luckenbach had radar failure during last Friday's collision with the Navy hospital ship Benevolence off the Golden Gate. Mate Martin Dayton testified the radar was inoperative despite a functioning direction finder, with repair work pending. The hearing, held on Yerba Buena Island, noted fog limited visibility to about 1000 feet. Government seeks 14 million dollars in damages from Luckenbach Steamship Co.
Morris Watson, ILWU press rep, says locals must decide on stop work meetings if expelled by the National CIO. He notes no noon stoppage and cites a North Bend caucus denouncing the CIO trial. ILWU President Harry Bridges, jailed last week, says the CIO is ready to expel them next Tuesday.
One of the season's largest landings was made today when E. O. Swanson's Elfin II brought in 45,000 pounds of salmon for the Alaska Coast Fisheries. Peter Lunde's Attu landed 1,800 pounds for Eng Strom Brothers, marking another fruitful fishing day. The crews report strong hauls and continued demand for fresh salmon along the coast.

In Anchorage Alaska on August 29 Fish and Wildlife officials report Cook Inlet salmon pack for the season ending August 12 exceeded the 10-year average by 52.9 percent. Gear influx during Red salmon season and better weather are cited as causes. Sixteen Inlet canneries packed 392,227 cases of one pound tall cans and four Kodiak Island canneries packed 49,460 cases of tall cans of Cook Inlet salmon.
Mrs. Margaret Berlin returns to Juneau aboard the Aleutian after several weeks away in the south.
A 40 passenger Convair chartered by a New York stock broker to fly with his wife model to a Lake Placid fashion show, with pilot co pilot and stewardess aboard. They returned to Weir Cook to retrieve a cosmetics bag then resumed the trip. The charter cost about 1800 dollars according to airport attendants.
At 2 15 a m the City Fire Department responded to a mattress fire in a small rear cabin of the City Cafe. The bed burned and the cabin was heavily smoked, reported Chief Minard Mill.
