Washington Aug 29 The National Recovery Administration pressed to seal a permanent basic code with coal industry compromise. General Hugh S Johnson calls it a milestone in industrial control. The admin considers the plan satisfactory and awaits drafting before approval, leaving one major code for the retail trade.
President Roosevelt, in Hyde Park on August 29, conducted two late evening meetings with Postmaster General Farley and Secretary Ickes to push the New Deal forward. He announced plans to return to the national capital by sea after scouting bridges in Albany, and eased currency and foreign exchange concerns, signaling no immediate talk on stabilization.
Willem Thomas 18 Indian of Klawock died yesterday at the Government hospital after a long illness. He was a resident of Klawock and the outcome closes a chapter on a young life amid local health concerns.
In Chicago on August 29 a gang mob fired machine guns from an automobile into a South Side street crowd. The hail of bullets endangered many, including women and children. John Secalzititty, an alleged alcohol peddler, was wounded and doctors say his injuries are likely fatal.

Washington DC August 29 Justice Daniel O Donoghue of the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia upheld the constitutionality of the Federal Agricultural Adjustment Act as part of Roosevelt emergency measures The court dismissed a suit seeking a temporary injunction against enforcing the Chicago milkshed agreement The plaintiffs said the plan to set milk at 10 cents a quart would ruin their over counter cash business which sells milk for six and a quarter cents per quart An appeal will follow the decision
Hyde Park New York August 29 President Roosevelt directed the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to set up a quick temporary credit channel for member firms of NRA to cover the period between higher overhead and later returns. Some communities report complaints that credit to meet new demands is not available.
Secretary Henry A Wallace urged a 15 percent reduction in wheat plantings under the government crop reduction plan. Farmers would receive payments offset by removing the crop from the wheat product processing tax. The measure targets retirement of about 1,600,000 acres. J B Most of Copper River Packing Company travels to Seattle aboard the Yukon.
Judge George FP Alexander announces seven federal court appointments effective Friday September 1 in Juneau and Ketchikan. Appointees include Robert C. Coughlin as Clerk of Court J F P Mullen as United States Commissioner Venetia Pugh Deputy Clerk John H Newman Court Reporter Frank Botelho Bailiff and Acting Librarian HR Shepard Jury Commissioner EC Austin United States Commissioner at Ketchikan. Most appointees are Democrats with Shepard the lone Republican. Coughlin has served as purser on ships Estebeth and Margaita and is a noted Southeast Alaska athlete.
Prof Raymond Moley said reports of a rift with Secretary Hull prompted his resignation as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury are untrue. He will edit a forthcoming magazine funded by Vincent Astor, described as an adventure in national political journalism. Secretary Hull declined to confirm any pressure for Moley’s departure.

In San Francisco on August 2, salmon fishers from Alaska crowded the municipal courtroom to testify in a labor dispute against Emil Mayer and Sam Young. They claim the pair ran an unlicensed employment agency, sold unnecessary clothing at high prices, and underpaid workers. Witness Juan Morena described being pressured to buy a full outfit, work 12 to 15 hours daily for nine cents an hour, and forfeit part of wages upon return. Attorneys for the defendants faced lengthy legal exchanges as the case remained unresolved with about $10,000 in unpaid debts cited.
Secretary Harold L. Ickes of the Interior Department is designated by President Roosevelt as Administrator of the new working agreement for the oil industry. Washington reports a surge of women named as Postmasters under the new regime led by James A. Parley. Since Nellie Dougherty became Acting Postmaster at Minot ND last March, 269 women now head U S mail offices in their towns. All hold the title Postmaster though many serve under recess appointments awaiting Senate confirmation.

President Roosevelt lifted the gold embargo allowing newly mined gold to be sold abroad while tightening hoarding rules. Two executive orders grant the Treasury authority to license all gold sales overseas and to regulate gold holdings. Within 15 days holders of gold above 100 dollars must report to the government, and within 30 days holdings over 100 dollars are banned. Gold mining stocks rose on the New York Exchange, with Homestake and Alaska Juneau Gold Mining among gainers. Treasury figures expect a large rise in profits and renewed industry activity from the order. Officials say the move expands world market access for newly mined gold, though exact production effects remain uncertain.

Berlin Aug 29 Germans regard hints from President von Hindenburg and Adolf Hitler as signs of a possible restoration of the monarchy and reaffirmation of Reich claims to the Saar territory ceded to France by the Versailles treaty. Hindenburg spoke of the Kaiser when accepting a forest gift at Neu Decker near his ancestral home. Hitler addressed a rally of about 200000, pledging no new war or annexations but insisting Saar claims remain.
Belgrade August 29 The Red Cross of Jugoslavia wins tax exemption on property and funds held in banks and gains travel and correspondence privileges by a summer Parliament law. The measure, backed by War Minister, treats the Red Cross as part of the army sanitary corps. In another note, Mayer Brothers jewelers report a Juneau arrival after Alaska trips. Davis Oklahoma August 29 J J Allen, claimed as 100, celebrated with twins born after his 80th marriage. he milks cows, assists on the farm, and preserves good eyesight without glasses.
