Bulletin from London reports Moscow radio claiming Russian troops reached the Hungarian border through a Carpathian pass. The same broadcast says the Red Army is advancing toward Bucharest and has captured Bralle, with further details promised on page two.
Washington column recalls Bernard Baruch clashing with Donald Nelson over control of the War Production Board during wartime policy battles. It notes Baruch pressed by Byrnes and Somervell, Nelson’s ally, as senators and the White House navigated leadership moves and prepublication controversy.
Gen Dwight D. Eisenhower and American, Canadian, and British staffs toured Paris ending near the Arc de Triomphe. Crowds along the Champs Elysees cheered as he praised the Allied forces and Parisian spirit. Thousands of GIs greeted him and shouted from the crowd.
Skagway Alaska reports Mr and Mrs C J Sullivan will celebrate their thirtieth wedding anniversary with children and grandchildren at their home. They were married thirty years ago in Juneau where he worked for Alaska Juneau. Eldest daughter Arline plans to join soon.

More than 400 American fighters attacked enemy air fields and transport hubs across France Belgium Holland and Germany. They strafed troop trains destroyed 200 railway cars damaged about 1000 more and destroyed or damaged nearly 200 acre vehicles in the morning alone. The sweep extended east to Frankfurt indicating a broad continental offensive.
Gen Charles DeGaulle narrowly survives an assassination attempt as snipers fire on the Libération Parade in Paris. Spectators are killed or wounded along the four mile route from the Arc de Triomphe to Notre Dame as fascist sympathizers are blamed for the attack.
Paris reports a frenzied weekend as Gen. Eisenhower receives a warm welcome and Gen. De Gaulle escapes sniper fire. German bombardment continues while Paris radios describe quiet today. Nearly all directors of the resistance are slated for prominent roles in the new government. Snipers fired on the victory parade prompting De Gaulle to speed along the route and postpone his victory address.
Allied dispatch reports Polish and Allied forces breaking Nazi defenses along the Metauro River in northern Italy and advancing five miles from Pesaro toward Rimini. They crossed the Maggiore River and seized Fosombrone on the Fano route as combat continued against German positions. Separately, Lillian A. Gardner and Violet Hoar of the Territorial Department of Health were flown to Ketchikan for officials business.
Allied air forces and the Eastern Fleet bombed Padang and nearby facilities in Sumatra. The Indaroeng cement plant, Padang Port and Emmahaven airfield suffered heavy damage as warships and aircraft struck key targets in the Dutch East Indies.
Paris Aug 28 Marshal Henri Petain Pierre Laval and Edouard Herriott former Premier of the French Republic were seized by German secret police and sent to Germany shortly before Allied troops entered Paris. Petain issued a clandestine message urging unity and claiming all actions served France’s welfare with no further revelations.
Paris woke to a Sunday morning after a Saturday night crowd hailed Gen Eisenhower and his Allied staff with frenzied demonstrations. British Canadian and American troops with Parisian aid battled fires started by German Luftwaffe attempts to burn the city. The revelers aimed to drink the town dry, but supplies remained for the day. Wv G Rowe of the FCC registered at the Juneau Hotel from Anchorage.
General Headquarters in the Southwest Pacific reports MacArthur disclosed completion of an Allied airfield within 600 miles of the Philippines. Liberators bombed Palau, and ground action renewed in Dutch New Guinea as new air base on Middlebury Island brought aircraft 200 miles closer to the Philippines. A raid on Middlebury Island occurred under cover of darkness with one enemy plane observed.
Washington August 28 The War Labor Board has never recommended plant seizure to President Roosevelt in labor disputes short of arbitration. The inquiry recalls a two year old Illinois railroad case where the board faced action guidance and a memo by Wayne Morse urged referring the case for appropriate action. Seizure followed in several later touch and go disputes as martial law rhetoric spread.
The World Series opens October 4 in St. Louis with the St. Louis Cardinals as the home team in the initial game. The decision was made at a conference in the Baseball Commissioner K M Landis office.
Allied forces sweeping in a wide arc cross the Marne and take Meaux, advancing toward Sedan and threatening German retreat routes. American British Canadian troops widen bridgeheads over the Seine, with Mantes and Vernou cast as northern outlets and Rouen in reach.
London reports robot bombs falling around noon marking a change in sites with some bombs burning from a direction suggesting new launch locations. The weekly communique notes 450 flying bombs were launched in the week ending today, bringing total attacks to about 7,700 since the campaign began.
A large air transport crashed into a house near Prestwick Scotland killing 26 people including seven crew fourteen passengers and five occupants of the home. The house was demolished and the tragedy occurred near the transatlantic military air base. Mary More of the Territorial Department of Health is leaving soon for Nome to join her husband with the U S Signal Corps in that city.
