Aug 26 Portland reports say massive Tillamook fires devour valuable Oregon timber while an east wind drives flames toward virgin stands. With 2,000 fighters battling the blaze, ashes rain on a city of 2,000 as darkness settles for a fourth day and crews retreat for safety.
A providential wind shift saved Haney near Vancouver as BC fires worsened. Millions of feet of timber and much logging gear burned. About 100 firefighters fought a blaze at Chilliwack with two men severely burned. Additional fires burned near Boston Bar and Harrison Hot Springs.
The body of E. P. Leonard, a second class petty officer on the Navy Minesweeper Swallow, was found at the foot of a cliff in Ketchikan Alaska. Officials say Leonard apparently fell to his death after the Swallow left port on Thursday. Union Oil representative J. Boyle arrived in Juneau aboard the Northland and checked into the Zynda Hotel.
The United States seeks Samuel Insull, exiled utilities magnate, for extradition from Greece. A new indictment accuses him of bankruptcy act violations by transferring assets before his company’s collapse. Officials say the offense is extraditable under the US Greece treaty. Sibling Martin Insull also sought from Canada.
Ottawa reports James Murdock, vice president of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, says railway unions plan legal action to recover wages deducted since February 1, 1933. He notes a 10 percent deduction from February 4 1933 lasted to January 31 1933, with further 10 percent increases through May.
Miss Ruth Mason of Superior Nebraska arrives on the Alaska for an extended visit with her sister and brother in law Mr and Mrs Gilbert Prucha.
In Yakima Washington fruit picking returns to normal after pear season flareups with wage clashes easing while State Patrolmen and National Guardsmen remain on duty. Rigid anti picketing rules stay in effect for days. Sixty six orchard workers are jailed on first degree assault charges and a stockade is built to hold prisoners. Dozens of agitator families are cut from relief rolls.
Chief of Police C. J. Davis warns Juneau motorists to inspect brakes and halt speeding. He notes many cars cannot stop within 75 feet even at low speed and urges change for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. The city blotter shows arrests and fines so far this month.
Baltimore Maryland August 26 Maryland's toll of Wednesday's storm and flood has mounted to 21 bringing the total fatalities on the Coast to more than 50 and damage already estimated at over 15000000 dollars.

Each year 12,000 murdered, 3,000 kidnapped, 100,000 assaulted, 50,000 robbed, and 40,000 burglarized. Over $10,000,000 lost to incendiary fires per the report.

Reports say the kidnap gang plot faced a downturn as a San Francisco gunfight left one kidnapper dead after victim William Wood called for help. Two conspirators were jailed in Hartford while seven others were sought in Oklahoma City ahead of trials for abducting Charles Urschel. Gov Lehman in Albany signed a death penalty bill for kidnaping.
