Berlin Aug 25 Mrs Sinclair Lewis writing as Dorothy Thompson has been ordered by the German Secret Police to depart Germany within 24 hours. The expulsion follows alleged hostile remarks about the country and Hitler in recent magazine articles.
Washington Aug 25 Representative Joseph W Byrns of Tennessee Democratic Floor leader enters the race for the House Speakership creating a four corner contest. Also in the running are Sam Rayburn Texas William B Bankhead Alabama John Rankin Mississippi. Northern prospects named include John J O Connor James Mead of New York and John McCormack of Massachusetts. With Democrats likely to control the next House the Speaker selection will occur at a caucus before Congress convenes January 3.
New York August 25 Stocks were mostly indifferent in the short session with resistance to profit taking. Some substantial advances appeared in the final half hour and the close was steady to firm. Closing quotations include Alaska Juneau 20, American Can 100, American Power and Light SU, Anaconda 13, Armour B 63, Bendix Aviation 13, Bethlehem Steel 31, Calumet and Hecla 2, Curtis-Wright 3, General Motors 214, International Harvester 29, Kennecott 20, United States Steel 3575, Warner Pictures 4, and Pound at 5.06.
Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands remains seriously ill after five days of illness in Aasagaardsgrand Norway. She has shown no improvement and is currently described as slightly weaker while continuing a tour of Norway.
President Roosevelt announced a Cuban American trade treaty to cut high U S tariffs on sugar rum tobacco and winter vegetables and reduce Cuban duties on American lard wheat flour autos and other goods. The pact, first of 25 negotiations planned to revive U S foreign trade, benefits farmers and manufacturers but sugar producers fear impact.
Arthur H. Marsh a former Anchorage post office worker was sentenced to 21 months at McNeill Island after pleading guilty to three counts of grand jury indictment charging mail robbery. He admitted taking articles from mail at the post office including two red fox furs and a diamond ring during the spring of last year.
Ohio town sees Agricul ture Workers' Union leader Akey O'Dell clubbed and driven out by nonunion sympathizers. He returns with a pistol on his porch daring anyone to take him, bearing a large facial gash from the attack.

Washington reports the one man rule of the NRA drawing to a close as Gen. Hugh S. Johnson is to remain administrator of a temporary setup to be in operation within two weeks. A new board is expected to relieve Johnson of some duties amid reports of disagreements with Donald Richberg. Final Hyde Park conferences are planned within a fortnight, after which the Administration will seek a bill from Congress to make key NRA features permanent, including child labor prohibition, maximum hours and fair trade practices.
Prince George dispatch reports the two advance guard Martin bombers of the Army Air Corps completed a 700 mile hop from Whitehorse to Prince George in 6 hours 30 minutes. The ten aircraft recently visited Alaska and were set to depart this morning for Edmonton en route to Washington.

He affirms support for property rights while stressing government duties to protect the wider community.
U S Senator Thomas D Schall R Minn wires the President in an open letter reiterating his charge the Administration plans to force press censorship. He cites a proposed National Press Service to replace AP Hearst and United Press with exclusive government news for loyal newspapers.
Everett Washington, August 23. A serious brush fire started last night along the Pacific Highway north of the city threatening about 150 homes and blocking traffic for two hours. Firefighters battled the flames as winds shifted, keeping the blaze from spreading further.

In Los Angeles on August 25 Clyde W Coppas asked friend Robert Van De Mark to play Remember Me When I’m Gone. The guitar piece ended with Coppas collapsing and dying. Police say the ill man had swallowed poison.

About 200 inmates rioted this afternoon at the Eastern State Penitentiary in Graterford. Fires were set and a small outbuilding inside the walls was destroyed before State Troopers arrived in helmets with shotguns and riot sticks. A few injuries were reported on both sides as order was restored.
