Communist forces launched a significant push toward Pusan the South Korean supply base as Allied troops gained ground north of Taegu. US air power attacked three Red columns near Chinju while UN forces tightened lines and captured The Citadel on the Taegu corridor.
Tom McNamara notes Jacob Malik, Soviet UN Security Council delegate, is recalled to Moscow after his term ends August 31. He aimed to press for a Soviet peace treaty in Korea, seeking recognition of Communist China and expulsion of Chiang Kai-shek's reps, but Allied gains in Korea undermined the timetable and Malik’s usefulness at Lake Success ends.
Federal officers arrest six Ketchikan men after a crackdown on illegal salmon fishing. Two face felony bribery charges, others charged with taking fish in a closed area. The seine boat Rolling Wave was seized and held pending libel action. Former guard John Lamb held on bribe charges. bond set at 5,000 dollars. Joe Patterson arrested for bribing a federal officer. Agencies from FBI to Coast Guard cooperated in the operation directed by U S Attorney in Ketchikan.
AP Special Washington Service reports Senator Young from North Dakota introduced a bill to prohibit the importation of furs from Russia. The proposal aims to curb Russian fur products entering the United States.
Princess Norah will arrive from Skagway at 8 a.m. tomorrow and depart for Vancouver an hour later, arriving southbound at 7 p.m. tomorrow. Aleutian sails from Seattle Saturday and arrives here Tuesday, Baranof heads south Sunday, Susitna sails from Seattle Tuesday. No CPR ships will sail from Vancouver until further notice.

Eight Sitka youths, aged 15 to 22, appeared before Judge George W. Folta in district court. Seven minors and one young adult pleaded guilty to petit larceny for offenses dating from 1949 to 1950. Sentences included fines from 100 to 200 dollars, short jail terms, and probation officers appointed by fathers, with conditions of good behavior and payment.
Forecast for Juneau and vicinity calls for cloudy skies with rain starting tomorrow morning. Low near 54, turning to a high around 59 with southeasterly winds 15 to 25 mph. 24 hour precip totals include .31 inches in Juneau city and .68 at the airport.
The House approved a bill to grant monthly allowances from 45 to 85 dollars to enlisted personnel to assist with family support in addition to pay. The plan sets 70 dollars for two dependents, with deductions for lower grades and higher rates for more dependents. The Senate has passed a similar measure and a conference will draft a compromise.
In Fairbanks on August 24 closing sessions of the Alaskan Medical Association annual meet elected Dr. Dwight Cramer of Ketchikan as president. Officers named include Dr. J O Rude of Juneau as first vice president Dr. Howard Romig of Anchorage as second vice president and Dr. William P Blanton of Juneau as secretary treasurer. Ketchikan was chosen as next year’s convention site with sixty doctors from Ketchikan to Barrow attending this year’s meeting.
Landing's today showed an increase over the last 10 days with the Isis skippered by John Martinson landing 35,000 pounds of salmon and the Valiant skippered by Floyd Eperson bringing in 2,200 pounds for E. C. Johnson. For Engstrom brothers the Wanderer skippered by S A Stevens landed 20,000 pounds and the Sadie skippered by Carl Baker landed 2,500 pounds.
Vancouver August 24 The tieup of British Columbia coastal passenger and freight shipping could be nearly complete by Friday noon if AFL Seafarers International Union members walk out a strike against Union Steamship Company The union says over 100 deck steward and engine room workers will quit at the deadline unless a settlement is reached The move would leave shippers with only a few barges and small vessels while CN and CP rail lines remain tied up by a separate strike A vote on CPR and CNR vessels has been taken but results were not disclosed
Triplette and Dalziel with a base estimate of 113250 were low bidders for the Juneau Memorial Library contract. If the two alternates for basement work are accepted the total becomes 123550. Other bids were 136700 by Anderson Construction Seattle and 146746 by Sommers Valle Juneau and Seattle. The Sommers Valle bid was 6000 higher due to a telegram delay.
The Senate approved a bill to authorize the sale of 236.77 acres near Homer Alaska to This Side of Heaven Children’s Home. The land would fetch no less than 1.25 dollars per acre and the measure moves to the President for signature.
Harry Bridges won his freedom in a 2 to 1 Circuit Court ruling restoring his liberty after being jailed August 5 when his $25,000 bail was revoked on the Government plea that he was a menace to national security during the Korean war. Two judges upheld release, a third dissented. Vincent Hallinan praised the decision as restoring faith in the courts.
The Alaska Housing Authority reported Douglas 25 unit bid costs were higher by 2.10 per cubic foot than Anchorage for a similar job. E Glenn Wilder urged bidders to consider normal prices and criticized high war cost assumptions. Bids were rejected, and AHA plans to pursue the project with possible new bids, while chamber talk covered a Potlatch Holiday and dredging material disposal.
President Truman held a news conference addressing an unexpected nationwide rail strike threat and possible government action. He urged caution on the economic control bill while criticizing a reported change to priority controls. He noted Korea theater uncertainties and expressed hope for allied ground forces as the Philippines commit troops. He opposed a Spain loan and announced diplomatic appointments to Austria and the UN General Assembly, with details on delegates and alternates.
Senator Butler charges Governor Ernest Gruening with using a Federal agency to influence Alaska native votes. He cites letters to Grace Kohler and C Heurlin accusing state officials of seeking statehood to widen political control. Gruening declined comment when asked for reaction.
The Chinese Communists told the United Nations to withdraw all American forces from Formosa and announced plans to liberate the island from Nationalist rule. The Peiping radio quoted Foreign Minister Chou En-Lai sending the message to the U N Security Council and Secretary General Trygve Lie. The Seventh Fleet currently patrols the Formosa Strait to deter any Red aggression amid U S air force contingents in the area.
