Official announcement says Russian forces have driven German armies beyond the Angerapp river and now control East Prussia beyond the Vistula river and Danzig bay. This comes as battles conclude with major Russian gains and claims of strategic superiority nearby.
A London Mail dispatch reports the Gumbinnen engagement lasting six days with a battle line of 30 miles on each side. More than 100000 German troops are said to have been engaged and the Russians are described as achieving a decisive victory.
Prince Rupert residents, terrified by the prospect of an attack, stopped the Seattle bound Spokane for nearly an hour before allowing it to land. The Spokane notes Prince Rupert banks buried money under the ground and little business activity. It reports Rainbow headed for Rupert, passing 14 miles south of the town.

A London dispatch from Rome reports M. Witte, former Russian premier, has arrived as czarist envoy to Italy with the aim of winning Italy to the Allied cause in the war against Germany. Paris dispatches say Italy plans general mobilization, to be proclaimed soon.
Gen Villa declares no personal grievance against Gen Carranza and states he will pursue justice for his countrymen using only moral suasion. He issued the statement from Chihuahua Mexico dated August 24.
Rome August reported Radetzky, sister ship of the Zrinyi blown up at Andvari last week, has been towed to Trieste and is so badly damaged as to be useless.
Two Danish steamships Maryland and Broberg were sunk by floating mines in the North Sea on Saturday. The Maryland crew was lost, while the Broberg crew was saved.
Former congressman and vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee John E. Lamb died in Terre Haute Indiana. He passed away last night according to local reports.
