Theatre owner Alexander Pantages will face assault charges in Superior Court on September 23 in the Eunice Pringle case. His wife is ordered to stand trial September 3 over deaths linked to an automobile accident involving Joe Rokumoto, with claims of alcohol intoxication.
Henry Walker former municipal judge entered a police station in Chicago and warned officers he would close a local speakeasy himself unless police shut it down. He cited spending $1,000 for his son’s schooling and referenced past federal indictments for conspiracy to violate Prohibition.
Boston August 23 Eusidio Hernandez of the College of France argued before the International Physics Congress that death is not inevitable. He cited 1922 work by J. P. Neymans reviving an isolated head for three hours and Russia experiments. A heart kept alive 30 hours by A Koubliabko and others revived circulation. He urged a world wide study to prevent death phenomena.
Aug. 23 The House tariff revision by the Senate Finance Committee Republicans provoked another attack from Democrats and Republican Independents. Senator Borsh pledged to correct tariff inequality between agriculture and industry, but said neither the House bill nor the Finance Committee plan accomplishes that. Senator McKellar argued both bills constitute a general tariff revision, not a targeted adjustment. A full committee meeting to report the measure to the Senate is set for Sept. 4, the opening floor debate date.
In the I Crested Butte Mine at Smith Hill near Gunnison two workers, Lawrence Lynder and William Hem, were killed after a rock fall last night. Seven others were entombed while performing work that had lasted only two days. Rescue efforts continued as authorities investigated the incident.
New York August 23. A 15 room apartment atop the Desmon Delmonico hotel on Fifty-ninth Street and Park Avenue offers a luxury rental of 45 000 a year or 3 000 per room. London Aug 23 dispatches report Manchurian railways crowded with troop trains carrying Chinese soldiers to the front. Unofficial sources note border patrol activity by Soviet forces and a looming general offensive against Harbin, the hub of the Chinese Eastern Railway system at the center of the dispute.

In Ashland Wisconsin a frightened 6 year old girl Hilde Anderson chased a large black bear through the city for about half an hour before the bear fled back into the woods. Mothers armed with rifles had tried to protect families as residents watched. The event ended with the bear retreating into the woods. France plans a national aviation school with many laboratories for research and tests.
VICTORIA BC August 2. W A McKenzie Minister of Mines has instructed Dr J T Mandy resident mining engineer of the Allin Mining District to survey reported gold discoveries on the Tulsequah River across the Alaska boundary. If his report is favorable, road construction will be undertaken.
Pauline Stark, screen actress, filed a 6000 suit against James Cruze, alleging breach of contract for removing her from the principal role in The Great Gubbo as a talkie and replacing her with Betty Compson. Stark claims her professional repute suffers as Cruze said she could not read her lines. Also notes a passenger departure of Mrs. Kirk to the United States after visiting Mia Far Hunter.
Early report from San Francisco notes favorable weather concerns over the Graf Zeppelin route as 11 crew and 19 passengers travel aboard. The airship aims to reach Los Angeles by Monday sunset, with radio signals picked up by Pacific stations as revisions about the journey are issued.
