French Seventh Army completes land encirclement of Toulon, trapping remaining German garrison inside the fortified Mediterranean naval base. Allied naval armada offshore and land batteries shell enemy strong points as infantry push through southern outskirts. Continued on Page Six.

Russian forces push two columns toward the Vistula confluence as German reserves fight back. The drive threatens Warsaw’s siege, with 50 villages recaptured and heavy fighting around the Bug and Vistula rivers. Sandomiers region battles end in large losses for German forces.
Rome August 22 Allied forces complete occupation of Florence with Eighth Army patrols advancing beyond the northern outskirts. Allied Command cites persistent pressure on German flanks and street fighting but notes extensive damage was avoided beyond enemy demolitions. German communique reports gains on the Adriatic front near the Gothic line south of Rimini.
The fourth largest Romanian city has been evacuated ahead of a fresh Russian southward offensive. Russians push north, rendering large Balkan areas untenable as the conflict widens.
From the French front, American, British, and Canadian forces envelop a decisive push, advancing up to 10 miles toward Paris. Etampes faced heavy resistance before evacuation was announced by Berlin radio, while a Seine bridgehead formed at Fontainebleau. Belgian units, newly aligned with the French front, reported in action near Cabourg and Houligate. A Milwaukee resident, M. Ewald, registered at the Gasinean Hotel.
The American Women’s Voluntary Services will hold its regular monthly meeting tomorrow at 2 pm at the Governor’s House. Members will collect home made cookies for servicemen at the Aleutian bases during the gathering.
Aug 22 reports from a border town in neutral Spain say about 1000 German troops surrender to the expanding French Volunteer Army around the Bordeaux area as American motorized columns close in from the north. The dispatch notes that this marks the first word of American penetration south of the Loire River and mentions French Volunteer Forces also liberating Bayonne.
Geneva reports German secret police arrested Marshal Petain at Hotel du Parc in Vichy along with Gen Bridoux Admiral Blehaut and Bernar Minetrel. French underground says Mauis attacked Vichy as arrests were carried out. Continued on Page Three.
Allied forces shattered German lines across northern and western France, with Americans pressing along the Seine from Nantes toward Paris. French interior battle near Paris reported, Belfort defense bolstered by Laval’s ministers, and heavy German troop movements toward the Rhineland. Supposedly over 300,000 Germans affected in western France since June 6 as the Argentan-Falaise pocket yielded large enemy losses. The Third Army drives 28 miles from Nantes toward the Seine, trapping Seventh Army remnants.
Adriano Cabarloc a 40 year old Filipino cannery worker slashed his abdomen in a morning attempt on his life and hours later tried to jump from the Libby McNeill and Libby tender in Juneau the boat crew stopped him and he was taken to St Ann’s Hospital after a successful operation his health remained critical. He had left Seattle for the Taku cannery about May 23 suffering from cold and insomnia since arrival.
Residents leaving Juneau who will not return before September 12 are reminded that ballots for the General Election are now available in the office of U.S. Commissioner Felix Gray.
