At Atlantic City on August 22 the parley between anthracite operators and coal miners ended without an accord. United Mine Workers President Lewis warned that miners would be out of employment on September 1 if no unforeseen intervention occurs. Officials on both sides fear only government action can avert a shutdown, while Washington reports coal stocks on hand enough for four months in case of a September 1 strike.
