Athens dispatch reports the first brigade of Russian soldiers reaching Saloniki to join the Entente in a new offensive under Gen Serrial. Plans indicate about 20,000 Russians to be landed at Saloniki by week’s end as part of the renewed Balkan campaign.
Paris reports on August 22 that authentic advices indicate Field Marshal Mackensen has been placed in supreme command of the Austrian forces operating in the Balkans. The move signals a consolidation of leadership amid ongoing military operations in the region.
From Sofia comes word that Bulgarian left wing forces have begun a general offensive in the Struma Valley, capturing Demihissar and establishing positions on the Struma's left bank after repulsing British and French near Seres. In Athens, Russians arriving in Salonika stir Greek public opinion about entering the war with the Entente. Spangle Aug 22. Thieves stole the $4,000 Marmon belonging to George L Abbe, a noted sportsman, on Bothell road. The fleeing car burst into flames and was destroyed. FE A Lancaster arrived as the car burned, saved a new tire from the case, and returned it to L Abbe. No clue to the thieves. A reward is offered for information.
Davenport held for grand jury action as attorney general says, like the Mabray gang, the alleged swindlers operated across Iowa. They cleaned up about 100000 dollars in weeks with fake horse races and wire tapping. William Kearins of Duniay lost about 20280 dollars and David Francis of Westchester around 10000 dollars.
New York August 22 prices show all grades of refined sugar cut 25 cents per hundred pounds. Fine granulated sugar now costs 7 cents less per hundred pounds, reflecting a broad move in refined sugar pricing.

Washington August 22 The enemy fleet of great strength convoying thirty transports laden with an invading army neared within 600 miles of the Atlantic coast this morning initiating the largest war game ever undertaken by the navy. Rear Admiral Henry Mayo commands the Red fleet with fifteen battleships six destroyers and other craft as scouts. Rear Admiral James Helm leads seventeen torpedo boat destroyers and seven light cruisers with fifteen submarines close to shore as the frontline defense.
