Russian Military Police and German police under their control crossed into the American sector of blockaded Berlin for a black market raid seizing five Germans. An American official said the action violated U.S. jurisdiction. Earlier raids targeted Potsdamer Platz with clashes and injuries.
The Washington Merry-Go-Round reports a long-running dispute between Averell Harriman and Gen. Lucius Clay. It notes Clay’s inability to delegate and his overwork during a Berlin crisis visit, causing tension with government agencies and sometimes with peers. Continued on Page Four.
The United Nations Special Committee on the Balkans reports Albania Bulgaria and Yugoslavia aiding Greek guerrillas threatening Balkan peace. The panel says the Soviet satellites supplied arms allowed base staging and offered radio propaganda support to the Athens insurgents.
President Truman ordered Selective Service to mail classification questionnaires to single non veteran draft registrants by September 7 under the new peace time draft act. Deferments cover dependents veterans essential workers and other wartime patterns.

Secretary of Defense Forrestal will conference with the joint chiefs of staff at the Naval War College in Newport Rhode Island starting late today and continuing through Sunday. Washington August 20 the Federal Reserve posted new credit rules affecting consumer goods from fifty to five thousand dollars. Automobiles require one third down while larger items demand twenty percent down. Payment periods cap at two to eighteen months depending on price and loan type. Single payments and housing loans are exempt. President Truman signed the order calling it a first step under a new anti inflation law.
The United Nations warned Arabs and Jews to avoid further violations of the nine month Palestine truce. The Security Council acted after fears raised by Count Folke Bernadotte that Jerusalem tensions were getting out of hand. The council adjourned for a nine month recess before reconvening in Paris.
The Brown Bear, Fish and Wildlife vessel, arrived from the Pribilof Islands via Seattle. Edwin Johnson, Pribilof fur sealing manager, says the season yielded pelts valued at over two million dollars and notes a healthy rise in fur seal numbers. Passengers include 20 fur specialists from Fouke Pur Co of St. Louis, which handles sea pelts for the U.S. Government. Under a cross border accord Canada gets 25 percent of the total value.
Kuala Tembelang police in Pahang State pursued Communist insurgents last night. While they were away, insurgents burned down the police station. DeLain Badley of Albuquerque New Mexico is staying at the Hotel Juneau.
Washington Aug 20 three former New Deal lawyers Pressman John Abt and Nathan Witt refused to answer a House committee under oath whether they were members of a Communist underground. Rep Nixon said Chambers testified of a Red apparatus aiming to place Communists in federal jobs in the 1930s. Each witness cited self incrimination and constitutional grounds for declining questions.
President Truman ordered Attorney General Clark to obtain an 80 day injunction to forestall a threatened strike by 45,000 East Coast dock workers. The move follows a Fact Finding Board report on stalled talks between management and the AFL Longshoremen's Union. The dispute centers on overtime payment demands, with a strike slated for midnight Saturday.
Berlin reports say the Soviet Union is stalling negotiations for the freedom of two Americans, Lt Sherman Turner of Council Bluffs and Roland Myers of Brooklyn, detained after inadvertently crossing into the Soviet Occupation Zone while near the East German border. Mrs May Gabin flew to meet her husband in Seattle, planning a U S vacation before returning home.
Col. W. E. Potter, chief of the Alaska District Engineers, announced a $70 million airfield and barracks program. The Army will advertise bids mid October, with work beginning next March and completion by July 1950. Major barracks cost include $10 million at Fort Richardson and $7 million at another Richardson site, with $6.5 million for barracks at Gadd Field. Contractors urged to inspect Alaska projects and assess available materials and equipment.
Wright Field officials send a technical expert to the Willey Farm in Tilins, suspecting tests of radio initiated explosive materials. The fires, including a barn loss, occur after about 200 blazes in 12 days. The probe aims to confirm or deny the sabotage theory, with no immediate conclusion. Also noted, Ann and Elsa Johnson returned by Pan American Airways after visiting relatives in Oregon.
Wrangell Chamber of Commerce President Thor Hofstad and Wrangell Cold Storage Manager P. C. McCormack rejected Senator Walker’s advice to fish under a possible extended season. They urged conservation, supported an earlier chum season, and noted closing now harms economy and spawning access. Mrs Frank Hermann departed yesterday for a three week vacation via Pan American Airways attending two family weddings and the Portland Cosmetic Show in Oregon.
State Department hardens stance over refugee teacher Kasenkina case demands Lomakin’s exequatur be revoked. Moscow faces formal protest and is warned the United States will not turn Kasenkina over to Russian authorities. Consular procedure clarified with Kasenkina spelling.
