Paris reports Major John J. Pershing told AP correspondents that victory in the war hinges on hard forceful blows delivered by a well trained American Army working with the Allies. He spoke during a brief stop in Paris on a business trip from the front.
General Petain, commander of the French Armies, visited the American training camp in France yesterday. He was impressed by the special maneuvers for his benefit and said he believed the Americans would become excellent fighting men.
Washington Aug 20 The legislative program for the extra session has taken definite form and leaders expect the vacation to begin around September 15 with the session to end by October 1.
Dover reports a crowded tram car ran wild down a steep hill due to brake failure, killing six teens and injuring forty including officers soldiers and sailors. In Washington the Senate passes Webb Dill permitting combos for foreign trade and reports Victor Murdock favorably for the Federal Trade Commission.
Steamers are listed with mail statuses and sail times. Alaska bound ships 3% days mail from the south. City of Seattle inbound via Sitka and Skagway expected Friday. Princess Sophia to arrive tomorrow night with little mail. Dolphin sailing from Seattle reported as not revealed. Washington August 20 Congressional opposition to the government plan to insure the lives of American soldiers and sailors was revealed today. It is believed this insurance will disrupt the pension system as statements and figures were presented at a House committee hearing on the bill.
