Moscow reports a wide front offensive as two Soviet Armies push across a 100 mile sector from Warsaw to the Lysa Mountains guarding Silesia. Coordinated attacks indicate rapid advance toward German homeland with continued coverage on page six.
Iceland President Sveinn Bjornsson will travel to Washington on August 24 to meet with President Roosevelt and State Department officials, as announced from Washington.
Washington column warns Japan’s young military clique may trigger upheaval similar to Nazi/German fascists. It notes the Emperor’s guarded position and predicts the fleet could play a decisive role if turmoil grows. Also reports Senator Chan Gurney praising women’s wartime roles while seeking postwar labor shifts.
A Brimstone smelling fireball streaked across Midwest skies Friday morning drawing reports of explosions and hundreds of sightings from Ohio Indiana Illinois and Kentucky. Observers described a bright plume and silvery flags in smoke with westward movement. Police airports and newspapers raced to verify whether a plane crash or meteor caused the event.
Patch's army extends the France spearhead to about 1000 miles and cracks within 31 miles of Marseille to flank Toulon. American and Canadian forces sit six miles northeast of Toulon as inland advances push toward the Rhone Valley. Salernes is the farthest inland town captured. Ta Roques Brussane near Marseille is the western outpost. German resistance remains stiff west of Bormes as Allied bombers strike Toulon.

Mae Stephenson and Bessie Couture were passengers on the Patricia voyage, with no inbound travelers reported.
All members of the City Council including Mayor A. B. Hayes take oath to act as special emergency police officers with arrest powers. City Attorney M. F. Monagle administers the oath as badges are ordered. The move, approved unanimously, cites immediate arrest needs. Contractors will review the new uniform building code at the City Engineer’s office. September 15 is set for public discussion and bond licensing concerns. The Royal Blue Cab Company gains a one car stand 8 am to 6 pm and a two car stand 6 pm to 8 am to ease congestion. Pan American Airways traffic leaders in Alaska enforce a first come policy causing Juneau based Sydney Smith and Robert Jordan to be denied seats. Harrington refused Smith despite a priority card, both men opting to sail south by boat after missing flights.
Gov. Thomas E. Dewey warned that retaining wartime labor restrictions after hostilities could end collective bargaining. He issued the Labor Day proclamation sixteen days early, despite prior criticism from Philip Pearl of APL for not giving the AFL a special message.
