Anchorage AFL plumbers union Local 367 called off a strike that halted Alaskan defense work valued between 200 and 400 million dollars. About 225 members participated in the walkout which began July 26. Federal conciliators announced the pact with few details.
Fires roared through tinder dry forests across the Pacific Northwest with a 4,000 acre blaze in Modoc Forest near Kla math Falls the largest. The Precision Lumber planer mill near Corvallis was destroyed in an estimated 25,000 loss while Moore Timber near Grants Pass was saved. Fire crews from U S Forest Service battled multiple blazes, including 150 to 200 acres in Gifford Pinchot National Forest and 600 acres south of Grants Pass along the highway into Siskiyou National Forest.
Among Seattleites newly registered at the Baranof Hotel are Bailie Christiansen Prudence P Mori Cornelia N Briones HM H Dent Edward Gwin Mr and Mrs Frank Leclerc a C E Petersen and Ben BioRe.
Washington column claims Republicans and Dixiecrats secretly plan to merge seniority and govern Congress jointly by 1952, then control the electoral college to name a conservative president. The alleged ringleader is J Harvie Williams of North Carolina, with claimed support from Senators Mundt and Bricker and Representative Halleck.
Governor Gruening reassured residents outside Juneau that civil defense planning covers Thane West Juneau and Glacier Highway districts. He said the Civil Defense Council led by R. E. Robertson aims to protect all areas from Thane to Eagle River on both sides of Gastineau Channel. Col. J. D. Alexander, overseeing Alaska civil defense, was en route to Mount McKinley Park for a regional meeting.
A king salmon tagged by Robert R. Parker swam about 1100 miles from Hoktaheen near Cape Spencer to St Helens Oregon along the Columbia River before capture by E L Browning in a gillnet from June 27 to August 3. The Alaska fisheries director C L Anderson notes the prior record was 1000 miles and the fish grew three inches during its southward voyage.
Princess Kathleen docks in Vancouver and Alaska arrives Sunday while Prince George sails from Vancouver today and reaches Aleutian waters Sunday from Seward. Baranof leaves Seattle tomorrow for a Tuesday arrival here, Princess Norah sails from Vancouver tomorrow and reaches here Tuesday, and Freighter Chena plans Seattle departure on August 24.
The United States accepted Turkey's offer to send 4,500 troops to Korea, marking the third formal acceptance after Thailand's 4,000 and the Philippines' about 5,000 men. The State Department said Washington is deeply gratified by Turkey's offer.
Miss Susy Winn of Juneau travels via Alaska Coastal Airways to Prince George B C to speak for the Juneau Chamber at the Associated Boards of Trade of Central British Columbia convention. Resolutions urge Taku valley road and interior coastal highway links plus year round Haines Cutoff maintenance. Main aim is Taku road connecting Juneau with the Alaska Highway or coastal highway and opening the Tulsequah mining area.
Samuel Wilder King, chairman of the Hawaii Statehood Commission and former Hawaii delegate, asked national newspapers to press for Senate action on the Hawaii statehood bill stressing its national and international implications. He warned that letting the bill die would be a terrible letdown for Hawaii’s people. King also led the Hawaii Constitutional Convention which drafted a proposed state constitution.

Military sources say even with warning systems, only a fraction of attacking bombers might be destroyed before reaching the northern border. Air Force strategists emphasize destroying launch bases and industrial centers to halt such raids, with bases in the continental U.S. and Alaska as prime targets. Washington and major industrial areas would be prioritized by attackers.
Washington dispatch reports a heated exchange as President Truman denounces Senator Wherry for calling the deaths in Korea on Acheson. Wherry replies that Truman’s failure to remove Acheson shows contemptible policy. Taft adds critique, saying the administration lacks a clear plan.

In North Bend Oregon on August 18 the CIO Longshoremen's caucus voted 63 to 9 to withdraw from the Maritime Federation of the World and the World Federation of Trades Unions, ending Harry Bridges Honorary Presidency. The decision came at a noon recess after a tightly contested closed meeting. The caucus had previously agreed to support the government maritime security program if it remained within limits.
On August 18 1940 Longshoremen Local 824 AFL ILA refused to unload Russian furs aboard the British liner Mauretania valued at 138000 dollars and voted not to handle future Russian goods. Earlier two other locals declined shipments of Russian crabmeat from different ships, with the furs likely to be returned to England.
Washington announces a freeze on sale of surplus government property to reassess its defense necessity. The order covers war plants supplies equipment and materials for civilian and military use, regardless of prior disposal authority. Jess Larson heads surplus property disposal and says excess property must be screened with all federal agencies before surplus designation.
Two Barrow brothers from New York begin a 6000 mile inland water trip to Alaska in a 14 foot outboard motor boat. Hank Barrow, 42, a former Merchant Marine captain, joins Carroll Barrow for the Hudson River starts. They will cross Canada to reach the Pacific, then the Inside Passage to Alaska and file reports for several papers.
Jacquelyn Fisher pleaded guilty before U S Commissioner Gordon Gray to speeding 55 mph on the Douglas Highway and was fined $25. The complaint was signed by Alaska Highway Patrolman John P Monagle.
United Nations troops and tanks halted a 30,000-strong North Korean drive near Taegu and then counterattacked. U.S. forces northwest of Taegu pushed toward the Naktong River bridgehead, while South Korean units recaptured Pohang and Kigye. In the Changnyong sector, Marines and the 24th Division advanced up to three miles, driving back the Fourth Division. U.S. planes and B-29s supported the effort, and a relief program for refugees was arranged in Pusan with Gen. MacArthur directing evacuation.
Fairbanks Alaska August Fourth Division Republicans set six for planks and two against in the platform. They oppose fur imports from Russia and the one percent territorial property tax. They back initiative and referendum, elected governor, resident-worker hiring, $200000 territorial funds to match $800000 for a revolving fund aid to Alaska farmers, road and airport development in outlying districts, and aid for the University of Alaska and Territory schools. Democrats have not yet announced their platform.
The Defense Department said last night that planned July 1 withdrawals of Air Force service units from outlying Aleutian bases have been cancelled because of the Korean conflict. The bases remain open to handle air traffic to the Far East and involve service units rather than combat units.
