In Endololo Italy Aug 18 the Piccard balloon ascent ended after nearly 12 hours with a gradual descent watched by 2,500 locals. Piccard said the trip was profitable and aims to study cosmic rays to gauge if the universe survives or declines.
Capt Wolfgang von Gronau and three companions depart Lac La Biche for Prince Rupert following the Athabasca River route with possible refuel at Prince George. Mollison plans a trans Atlantic hop from Stag Lane to Roosevelt Field, then back to Croydon in a tiny plane called Hearts Content.
Paris reports Bordeaux Burgundy and Champagne winegrowers prepared to ship one bottle per three Americans as soon as Prohibition dies. They cite a 40 million bottle mature reserve and 140 million bottles of green stock for possible US warehouses, amid hopes of a new era for French wine exports.
Valley Stream New York August 18 A forecast warned of bad weather as an endurance flight by Mrs Thaden and Mrs Marsalis neared completion after four days aloft. Marsalis showed abdominal pains last night raising fears of appendicitis. The plane has refueled enough fuel to last until Friday, promising to break the record for women in an endurance flight.
Francisco Camarillo, arrested in Sitka Tuesday on a simple assault charge, was found guilty in the United States Commissioner's Court. Judge R W DeArmond sentenced him to 30 days in jail.

In Topeka Kansas on August 18 Vice-President Charles Curtis received formal notice that the Republican Party for a second time had chosen him as Herbert Hoover's running mate. The simple ceremony drew party leaders from across the nation and many constituents. United States Senator L J Dickinson of Iowa delivered the notification speech.
British captain W N Lancaster was acquitted by a Miami jury after a four hour, forty eight minute deliberation in the case over the slaying of Haden Clarke. The verdict sparked near demonstrations while Mrs Jessie M Keith Miller testified for Lancaster and Clarke was found shot at the Miami bungalow.
Association Against The Prohibition Amendment announces Jouett Shouse as President succeeding Henry Cur yan as Vice Chairman of the Board. Pierre Dupont says new work is needed in several states to push ratification of the proposed amendment. Shouse is named to guide this expanded effort. Dr. W H Larrimer warns grasshopper control measures waste time and money. Bishop Cannon Jr criticizes Hoover stance on Prohibition and predicts possible loss of electoral votes.
Patrolman Norman A. Voss, 26, narrowly survives a gunfight after a bullet meant for him tears into the street directory he carries in his pocket. The page notes the directory deflected the shot, sparing a more serious wound as the officer collapsed.
Sioux City reports farmers strike across Iowa Nebraska and South Dakota with high prices fueling protests. County Sheriff seeks state aid as about one hundred farmers escort deputies to escort a five truck fleet on the highways.
