Wendell L. Willkie came home to Ellwood to accept the Republican nomination amid cheering crowds and band music. His family and party supporters gathered beside Elwood's enlarged railroad yards as Summit Post members greeted him, marking a wartime era rally and homecoming.
Washington reports two backstage developments on Lindbergh radio broadcasts. Fulton Lewis and William R. Castle Jr. distance themselves, while Colonel Robert McCormick of the Chicago Tribune rises as a close associate. Colonel Truman Smith of Army Intelligence also linked, with Smith hosting Lindbergh at his Berlin-era contacts and possibly aiding broadcasts. Continued on Page Four.
Associated Press reports that new Nazi bombers are being used in the attack on Great Britain. The German news agency DNB describes these craft as flying battleships with greater capacity and heavier armament than any prior aircraft, their sides studded with machine guns and capable of more destruction than before.
Spokane Chamber of Commerce proposes to Roosevelt that territorial trade with Great Britain for over-age U S destroyers include a military road from Washington to Alaska. The plan aims to bolster Pacific Northwest defenses and was sent via Representative Leavy to the War and State Departments.
Wayne Drayton son of attorney Thomas B. Drayton of Ketchikan has left for the states to attend Virginia University. He will begin a four year law course after graduating from the University of Alaska.
The Duke of Windsor took the oath as Governor of the Bahamas in Nassau and pledged to aid the colony in reconciling local interests with wartime changes. He appeared with the Duchess on the balcony after the ceremony as both received an ovation, and the wives of officials curtsied to the Duchess.
Lieut. Comdr. George Clay Jones aged 52 died after a heart attack and his body was sent to Portland for burial. A Coast and Geodetic Survey veteran since 1914, he captained the Discoverer through Alaskan waters before his death. His widow Mrs. L. H. Metzgar resides in the Baranof Hotel for a month.
Berlin proclaims unlimited sea and air war against Great Britain. The warning, aired by German radio, claims neutrality vessels and lives in besieged waters are not Germany's responsibility. Sinking of two large steamers near the Isle of Man is reported, with a third listing after mine damage. Private advices suggest ships may have carried German and Italian internees. Isle of Man hosts concentration camps.
Rome broadcasts Mussolini aligned paper Popolo D Italia warns Greece to define its position on Albanian claims at once. The article says Greece may be formally asked within days to accept or reject territorial claims on the Greek Albanian frontier amid Italian accusations of Greece aiding Britain in the Mediterranean war.

Agencies juggle units across buildings and even convert spaces like a roller rink into Justice Department offices. Officials warn the relocation pressure rivals housing shortages, with widespread shifts continuing.
Berlin reports that Germany will not be responsible for the safety of the American Legion, returning to America from Pet Samo Northern Finland with several hundred aboard. The ship remains on course within the danger zone near the British Isles despite Germany’s warning.
Rome reports Italian advance enwraps British defense in Somaliland. One hundred dead and many prisoners, with large quantities of arms and supplies seized. Ruth Torkelson, daughter of Emil Samuelson, sails south on the North Sea steamer and plans to visit relatives in Portland before nurse training at Emanuel Hospital. The Great Salt Lake is 30 miles wide and 70 miles long.
Al Weathers arrives in port aboard his trawler Deutz with a cargo of 4000 pounds of salmon purchased at 13 shillings 8 pence per unit plus 5 percent commission.
Nazi raids drop time bombs over England causing delayed explosions in London suburbs and elsewhere. One bomb damaged homes, another hit a production plant, a third exploded shortly after drawing crowds. Prepare for casualties as fear spreads.
Havre de Grace Md Aug 17 The fate of the Gold Mine Bridge on the Susquehanna has changed. The old double decker, once slated for demolition after a new toll span opened, will be kept for national defense but closed to traffic. The toll bridge remains in service.

London reports a week with no German raiders over Britain yet declares a struggle for air supremacy ongoing. Britain warns ships away from the Channel and Bay of Biscay as raids continue, while RAF strikes target a coal-to-oil plant near Leipzig and Libyan ports face bombardment.
