Moscow reports the Red Army pressing toward Warsaw from the Praga district across the Vistula with fierce resistance. Soviet forces push from East Prussia toward Lyck while Rokossovsky’s group nears Warsaw, with 32 Nazi tanks and 800 troops reported destroyed.
Los Servatore Romano expressed belief in Allied victory in World War II in an Atlantic Charter article. It stated the world is now dominated by Allied armed forces and hoped the charter's principles would be translated into international life.

Chungking Aug 16 American Liberators bombed the naval base at Mako, Pescadores Islands, marking the first strike on those Japanese positions between Formosa and China. All attack planes came from Chenaults 14th Air Force. No details were given on the Mako raid. Mako lies about 1,700 miles southwest of Tokyo and 400 miles north of the Philippines.
Washington, Aug. 16. Production Chief Nelson forecast that Germany’s fall will lift U.S. output to 1939 levels. He said munitions production would be 40 percent higher after X-Day, the date of Hitler’s collapse, enabling conquest of Japan.

French forces in the region are led by De Lattre De Tassigny with air support from Brig. Gen. Gordon Saville and Vice Admiral Hewitt directing naval operations and air units.
