Military authorities said morale problems would vanish once soldiers grasp the dangers facing the United States. This followed Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson's national broadcast address to U S troops. The gravity of threats seemed forgotten amid the wartime mood, with continuation noted on page three.
A small isolationist clique tried to sidetrack House leader Joe Martin at a secret Republican meeting. Ham Fish led the bid for an independent leadership while naming allies Vorys Keefe Knutsch Crowther Chiperfield Robsson. The group probed loyalty to Martin and denounced his stance on foreign policy.
The Nacionalistas in Manila unanimously re nominated President Manuel Quezon and Vice President Sergio Osmena to lead the Commonwealth for another term. An international pact on war prisoner treatment was signed by 47 nations including Britain Germany and the United States.
Jerry Chapman of Juneau Alaska, Soap Box Derby champion, will race in heat 14 in Akron for the Nationals. Weighing and safety tests run today, final instructions and a goggles parade tomorrow. The race begins at 2 15 pm EST with a 4 30 to 5 pm finals broadcast and a 7 30 pm champions banquet at the Armory.
Washington Aug. 16 In a move to clear the marine radio operators union of subversive agents the Bland bill would let the FCC deny licenses to radio operators on U S merchant vessels proven to be subversive. The measure faces support from labor allies but is seen as a potential pattern for later anti communist acts. The bill defines subversive as anyone who believes or advocates control or overthrow of the government. Continued on Page Two.
Allied leaders FDR and Churchill discuss a Stalin backed Moscow conference to pool U S British and Russian resources for crushing Nazi Germany. Reports from Shanghai London and Saigon indicate Japan plans to attack Russia within weeks and Arctic landings may aid Murmansk routes.
Dr. K Falkenberg traveled the All Canadian route to the Klondike rush and later became a North Sea traveler. Dr. Palkenberg stayed in Dawson for years after the gold rush until the district stabilized. About 40 000 tons of cargo moved to pree China via the Burma Road in six months.
Mrs A S Walkowski wife of Dr A B Walkowski Deputy Commissioner of Health for the Third Division and her two children Anne and Mary Jane were in Juneau today while the Denali was in port their Anchorage home noted. Buy defense stamps.
Deputy U. S. Marshal Thompson arrived in Juneau aboard the North Sea after a week in the states with a patient for Morningside Hospital in Portland. He escorted Gus Lindquist, a federal prisoner from Wrangell, who will finish a six month sentence for drunk and disorderly conduct at the Federal Jail here.
August 16 War Depart ment orders move Brigadier General Jease A. Ladd 53 from Fort Lewis Washington to Fort Richardson Alaska. Ladd formerly commanded the 11th Infantry and recently reopened the strikebound North American Aviation plant in California. Also ordered are Brigadier General A M Patch Jr to Camp Croft South Carolina and Brigadier General Orlando Ward to the First Armored Division.
Mrs Herbert Waugh and her two children Robert and Patricia have returned to Juneau aboard the North Sea after a lengthy trip to the States. Robert has been in the south for about a year and a half while Mr Waugh left about two and a half months ago. They visited Seattle and Spokane during the journey.
Secretary of State declined to comment on London reports that the United States would be chief guardian of the Pacific after the Roosevelt Churchill conference. He also avoided revealing plans on countering Nazi activity in the hemisphere. A London carnival from the 18th century toured England and displayed a man eight feet tall who could snap six inch posts with one knee.
