Jackson Miss August 16 Former Senator James K Vardaman leads former Congressman Hubert D Stephens by under 200 votes as 71 of 82 counties report in the Democratic primary Stephens runs on a pro Wilson platform with Belle Kearney also polling strongly The party tried to block Socialist and Republican voters Vardaman hoped for 20000 votes from that bloc and Kearney drew votes that otherwise would have gone to Vardaman If Kearney surpasses 25000 votes a second primary would be held between the top two candidates.
Jackson Mississippi August 16 A Varda man headquarters claim a lead for former Senator Vardanman over rivals of about 6000. Returns show Vardaman 9045 Stephens 53067 Miss Kearney 16400. Total vote likely 160000 to 180000 with 128500 reported. Runoff probable as no candidate has majority under state law.
Jefferson City August 16 The official tally from the primary shows Senator James A Reed with a plurality of 6442 over Breckinridge Long for the Democratic Senate nomination.
Sacramento reports about 200000 more voters in the state registration now topping 1.4 million, the largest in state history. In Vienna the cost of living jumped 124 percent in 30 days per government figures.
London August 16 Cecil B Harmsworth undersecretary for Foreign Affairs tells the House of Commons that the Customs Consolidation Act of 1853 authorizes the government to levy countervailing duties on foreign goods to offset advantages granted by foreign subsidies, if an American ship subsidy bill passes.
In EVANVILLE Chicago, Eastern Illinois yard bombed late last night but exploded harmlessly. Strike breakers quit their jobs during the night following the attempt to blow them up.
A Standard Oil production chief with 11 workmen will leave Friday on the freighter Redondo to prospect for oil in the Cold Bay district. They will carry 500 tons of supplies and 600 tons of drilling machinery and drill through fall and winter. The party is led by W. L. McLaughlin and will arrive in Seattle tonight.

Benton Ill Aug 16 Sixty thousand bituminous coal miners gather tools to return to pits on short notice as Chicago conference signs off on a Cleveland pact. The agreement sets wages at strike start scale and remains effective to April 1 with an advisory fact finding commission to address future disputes. Check off system for union dues is preserved.
Cleveland report notes operators and miners hail yesterday's agreement as unlocking capacity in two weeks.
