A combined French and Italian air squadron bombarded the munition factories and hangars at Muggio near Trieste and dropped incendiary bombs on Trieste, causing many destructive fires. Reports say vessels were damaged during the raid over the Adriatic.
Rome reports a light cruiser battle in the Adriatic off the Gulf of Manfredonia. The Admiralty says two Austrian craft were sunk and one Italian warship badly damaged. Details remain scant.
Nearly the entire Austrian fleet is reported to have departed from Trieste harbor with no known target port. The Austrian base remains at Pola on the Adriatic, about 55 miles southwest of Trieste, according to Navy Department advisories.
The Hague reports two German submarines of the Deutschland and Bremen types completed trial runs off Heligoland today according to advices received.
San Francisco August 16 Lieut James Grant Ferguson a Stanford graduate and former Marshfield Oregon high school principal was killed in Europe He led a charge at Longeval with the Black Watch Highland infantry and was struck by a shell and killed instantly
In Seattle on August 16 William Rockefeller brother of John D Rockefeller is in the city for three days. He travels with President A. J. Earling of the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul Railroad.
President Wilson postponed all conferences on the railroad situation today but will receive a 640 member committee in the White House east room tomorrow. The group largely consists of officers from the Brotherhoods and includes workers employed by the railroads. Tumulty said no reports on progress yet, but a practicable settlement basis is developing.
Pittsburgh Aug 16 Two trains drawn by four locomotives crashed head on near Gere this morning. Four crew members were killed and three locomotives were demolished. One freight train was derailed except for a flat car and the caboose. Orders were obeyed was cited as the cause of the accident.
New York aug 16 J P Morgan and Co deposited at the assay office ten million dollars in gold bars. This shipment came directly from England via Halifax not from Ottawa. Since shipments began this year Britain has sent a total of 212 million dollars in gold.
In the House of Commons Sir John A. Simon warned Britain against moves that would shift the world trade center from England to the United States. He stressed shipping and finance as the key, free trade and open ports as safeguards, and questioned imposing limits on Germany’s exports of foods.
General Tobias Smuts, member of Parliament in Capetown Union of South Africa, died on August 16. He was a 1897 presidential candidate for the Transvaal against Paul Kruger and played a prominent role in the Boer War.
The House passed the naval appropriation bill approving the Senate program for eight battleships and battle cruisers over 90 000 tons, totaling 315.8 million dollars. The bill funds more than 150 war vessels and aims to give the United States a second navy in fighting strength and overall balance.
In Nort Vancouver the municipal vaults were robbed overnight and into the morning. Police estimate the haul exceeds $10,000 with no clues yet identified.

A visiting herd of Elks will reach Juneau by the steamer Prince Rupert tomorrow afternoon. Local Elks plan a city reception with tours, shop visits, and a large monster dance at Elles Hall in the hotel. A seven piece orchestra will provide music and a light luncheon will be served before the group sails for Skagway.
Elma Washington reports two early settlers died this afternoon in Olympia. Hudson W. Himes, a pioneer of 1853, and John A. Alexander, a pioneer of 1851, had settled in the region soon after their arrival, marking the passing of notable local figures from the state’s early era.
King George and Kaiser William were reported on the Somme front in the past week. The King completed a ten day trip on the British front in France returning by a small cruiser. He praised progress of British, Australian, and Canadian forces and said a tremendous drive against the Germans is being planned by British and French.
Berlin reports the war office admitted Kaiser William was on the Somme front while King George was also on the British front. The Emperor is said to be now on the Russian front in conference with General von Hindenberg.
Seattle dispatch reports that steamship and dock managers formally rejected all arbitration proposals from striking longshoremen. Proposals carried strings attached, and nonunion workers have moved sling cargoes and truck cargoes rapidly for weeks.

Mariposa and AI Ki Ie slated to sail from Seattle tonight. Princess Alice to sail from Vancouver next Saturday. Alameda and Princess Sophia bound south Friday morning. Jefferson and Admiral Evans sailed south yesterday. Princess Sophia arrived from the south last night.

Washington August 16 The State Department cabled Beijing that it could not arrange the Chinese loan sought from American bankers. Officials said U S bankers felt unwise to invest in more foreign securities at this time and noted Chinese railroad securities were down to 72 in the United States with poor prospects for new loans.
Montreal Aug 16 The Canadian Pacific has purchased 14 000 tons of rolls and still has 11 000 tons to place.
Otto C. Heinze of the former firm Otto Heinze & Co has been discharged from bankruptcy. The action applies to his individual debts as no partner, amounting to over 1,500,000 dollars.
Paris dispatches say Italian forces entered Tolmino late tonight as a three day bombardment continued. Austrians evacuated the city and German lines on the Eastern Front were reportedly repulsed in recent clashes.
