London reports indicate Major Soviet withdrawals near Peromaisk as Budyonny's Army evacuates Busivka area. Nazi columns advance toward Nikolaev and Odessa, while Italian troops join the southern front and engage stiff Russian resistance.
Washington reports Colonel William Donovan has the Inside track to head Civil Defense if Fiorello LaGuardia leaves. The plan merges Civil Defense with Donovan's new Office of Intelligence, a fit White House advisers say given his WW II leadership. LaGuardia, New York City's mayor, is expected to quit CDA as his term bid heats up, though his time for the post is limited.
Twelve American fliers enlisted in transAtlantic bomber ferry service were killed in a takeoff crash that killed 22 others, including Arthur Purvis, chairman of the British Supply Council in North America. The crash followed a nearly identical accident last Sunday, making the week’s toll 44 lives. The aircraft carried Americans being returned to the United States to fly more bombers to Britain.
Washington Aug 15 Alaska is to have an additional 25 000 to promote the study and development of wildlife in the Territory. The special wildlife appropriation was passed by the Senate late yesterday and only awaits signature by the President.
H. W. Jewell assistant executive officer of the Alaska Game Commission arrives in Juneau by plane from Fairbanks after a six weeks Interior and Northern Alaska tour. New defense inventions are being submitted to the federal government at a rate of 100 per day.
Washington August 15 The war reshapes daily life as Easter lilies vanish from many churches and ceremonies. The bulk of U S bulbs come from Japan, 27 million yearly, 97 percent, with only 3 percent grown domestically mainly in the Pacific Northwest. A shortage forces florists to seek substitutes while the Agriculture Department investigates breeding lilies that can grow further south at Beltsville Maryland. Mrs. Helen Smith aged 31 died this morning at the Government hospital. She was the wife of John W. Smith and resided at Kake. The remains are at the Charles W. Carter mortuary. Buy defense stamps.
Lee Lucas son of Mr and Mrs A J Lucas sailed south from Juneau today aboard the Princess Louise. He will attend the University of California at Los Angeles.
A premature explosion at the United States Naval Air Base site on Japanski Island triggered a tremendous rock slide in Sitka Harbor. Seven men were buried under hundreds of tons of rock. one survivor, H. W. Hagadorn of Ketchikan, was rescued after five and a half hours. The six dead were Dewey Strode, R Carlson, R J McClure, BE A Burkley, R Bestae, and Earl Rosser, all employees of Stems Drake Puget Sound contractors. Rescue crews began work immediately, carefully removing debris. Continued on Page E8.
More than 300 Royal Air Force bombers attacked Hanover Brunswick Magdeburg Rotterdam and Boulogne while Berlin claimed the raiders were repulsed. The British Air Ministry reported terrific damage and the German statement noted changes in shipbuilding and industrial centers.
