Atlanta Aug 12 The worst tropical hurricane to hit the South in eight years passed inland after causing eight deaths and widespread damage along the Atlantic coast. Six drownings occurred in Charleston as floodwaters closed highways and cut communications for about 12 hours.
The Norwegian Legation announces Crown Princess Martha of Norway and her three children are en route to the United States aboard an American ship at the invitation of President Roosevelt.
Anchorage Alaska August 12 Two canneries report 96 000 cases of salmon processed this season the largest local pack on record reflecting strong harvest and enhanced processing capacity in the region.
Washington reports show large majorities in both Houses favoring compulsory military training and polls indicating broad national approval. Yet isolationist forces, aided by a diverse lobby, are deterring action amid an upcoming presidential campaign, delaying vote on the measure.

Aug 12 Ketchikan Maska reports the seine boat Harold wrecked in a vicious storm last Friday but crew saved. The blow cripples the Canned Salmon Industry ahead of the weekly closed season with minimal Saturday catches. Watchmen rescued from traps. Otto Anderson picked up after skiff swamped near Vallenar Point. Several traps damaged and three men missing ashore on Wales Island later found safe.
The Civilian Conservation Corps announces 400 enrollees will sail from Seattle on August 20 aboard the Army Transport Leonard Wood to build an airfield at Metlakaula Alaska on An nette Island. The field will serve as an intermediate landing stage for Army fliers traveling from Seattle to the Anchorage and Inks Air Corps Bases.
Catro Egypt Aug 12 The British Command said the Italian drive across British Somaliland toward the Gulf of Aden and Berbera has come to a halt as Italian columns are harassed by continual air attacks from British bombers.
Alaska's CAA plans a historically expensive airport development across the territory. Superintendent Marshall Hoppin says a Washington request drives the program with a September 1 submission target, detailing staff, surveying, and construction for a chain of airports at about a million dollars and more.
President Roosevelt announced a $7,225,000 allocation for War and Navy Departments to construct 1725 homes at three naval stations and Army posts. Of this, $1,625,000 funds 325 officer dwellings at Anchorage near the Army base.
London August 12 The British Government spokesman opposes Hoover's U S plan to feed Holland Belgium Poland and Norway arguing Britain will maintain the blockade against Germany and Nazi occupied areas because those nations could be supplied by Germany and food would be diverted. Also District Engineer Ike P Taylor of the Alaska Road Commission sails for Valdez to inspect the Richardson Highway on a routine trip into the interior.
Mount Bertha in the Fairweather Range Alaska, hitherto unclimbed, has been sealed and the summit reached by five members of Bradford Washburn's expedition sponsored by the National Geographic Society and the New York Museum of Natural History. They dog-packed from Glacier Bay landing June 30, established base camps, and finally summited on July 30 after a two week ascent. The party planted the National Geographic Society and the American flags on the peak as reports from Reid Inlet Glacier Bay reach Juneau.
London reports 120 British soldiers and sailors missing after the Egyptian liner Mohammed Ali Gibre is torpedoed. Admiralty says about 740 survivors were rescued.
In Tokyo on August 12 a mass meeting of about 3000 protesters urged British withdrawal from the Far East and favored closer ties with the Rome Berlin axis. Police enclosed the hall to prevent a march on the British Embassy after the rally under flags of Germany Italy and Japan.
Mrs J B Burford returns on the Selamer North Sea after a three week Seattle visit. En route she will stop briefly with her sister Mrs Miriam Ritchie of Ketchikan.
President Roosevelt told newsmen at a Boston press conference after inspecting Portsmouth Navy Yards and Watertown Arsenal that defense work is “getting into our stride” and proceeding well. He also visited Newport and viewed the training center shadow of the Constitution and noted torpedo plant work and a $25 million air base at Quonsett Point are on schedule.
The Nevada Secretary of State bans the Communist Party from the September primary and the November general election. The attorney general cites that a Communist cannot qualify for office due to aims to overthrow the U S Constitution by force. Dr Raymond Mundt of the Government Hospital will replace Dr Louis Salai at Kanakanak during Salazar's vacation, with a stop at Kitina before returning to Juneau.
British and German air forces fought a colossal battle along England’s south and east coasts. German raids across a 125 mile stretch caused heavy losses to dive bombers, while British anti aircraft and fighter defenses claimed many German planes shot down. The clash included a new balloon chain weapon and signals the start of a major German offensive.
