B 29 Superfortresses of the 20th Bomber Command struck Japan today hitting Nagasaki on Kyushu, a major ship center and port, and destroyed the Pladjoe oil refinery at Palembang Sumatra in the Indies.
At a special meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary delegates and alternates to the Legion convention were elected for the event to be held September 2 to 4 in Juneau. Mrs Mabel Lybeck was named delegate at large. Delegates include Dorothy Manthey Silva Zenger Anna Bodding Ida Cargenie Esther Gullafsen Agnes Kiefer Beulah Boyle Marion Hendrickson. Alternates include Elsie Sofoulis Betty McCormick Lucille Stonehouse Madeline Sturm Annette Keithahn Patricia Groves Helen Jewett Marie Hayes.
War Production Board debates peacetime conversion with big manufacturers pushing for delay. Sidney Weinberg of Goldman Sachs returns to Washington to back Nelson against Wilson, reflecting a split between big and small firms over war order access. Weinberg previously aided Nelson at Sears Roebuck, and now aligns with big business in WPB.
Rome August 10 The Vatican moved to aid Allies relieve Florence's starving population as Canadian troops with 250 Italian patriots crushed Fascist leaders in the southern Allied held city. Vatican, Italian and Polish forces in the Adriatic sector pressed a new Misa River thrust. Poles captured Francavilla three miles south of the Cesano River. Minor actions were reported along the Eighth and Fifth Army fronts as Germans withdrew to the north.
A German communique reports a grave new Soviet flanking threat to East Prussia and Warsaw areas west of the Narew and near the Pilica river. Berlin says Soviet attacks west of the Narew were repelled and notes Russian bridgehead gains across the Pilica heading toward the Vistula, with Warsaw’s vicinity under risk.
Madrid reports Vichy, a besieged city, fights 5,000 militiamen guardsmen gendarmes and state police while French patriots press to seize the Collaborationist capital. Pierre Laval is said to be in danger near his chateau ten miles south of Vichy.
American heavy bombers from England and Italy attacked fuel depots near Paris for the second time in hours. In Romania, over 500 bombers with escort struck the Ploesti oil center 36 miles north, and installations nearby were hit. RAF and Mediterranean units also targeted fuel concentrations around the French zone and Ploesti by night.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower announced that Allied headquarters shift from Britain to France consolidates air and ground units at a new command roughly the size of an army. Lt. Gen. Lewis Brereton leads the new force with Maj. Gen. Hoyt Vandenberg taking Brereton's former post. Lt. Gen. Frederick Browning remains deputy.
A joint Anglo American statement, issued with Roosevelt and Churchill approval, reports more than 500 German submarines sunk since the war began. It notes U boats were ineffective in July, a critical month for continental operations, and that July sinkings exceeded merchant ship losses. Edward Kraviec and G E Combest of Austin, Texas, registered at Anchorage Baronet Hotel.
Admiral Chester Nimitz announced that American forces have largely completed the conquest of Guam with only a small inland pocket near Pati Point still held by Japanese. Invasion began July 23 24 as Marine divisions and the 77th Infantry landed on the western coast and advanced north to cut off the island's Japanese garrison.
Allied forces advancing toward Mandalay have seized Taungni, ten miles southeast of Mogung, after overrunning Sahmaw. The Third Indian Division found many dead Japanese soldiers and abandoned equipment on a railroad fill between Taungni and Sahmaw, according to Allied Headquarters.
Tonight's session in City Hall Council Chambers from 8 to 10 marks the final chance for Juneau taxpayers to protest assessed property values. Tomorrow at 8, the board will meet with City Council members to set the local tax rate. Washington notes question how many voters read party platforms, citing long and short versions of Republican and Democratic platforms and a New York publicist’s view on party honesty.
Pasadena California August 10 The California Institute of Technology reports a moderately strong quake recorded yesterday afternoon with an estimated distance of 1400 miles in a northwesterly direction likely from the Queen Charlotte Islands off British Columbia.
Milwaukee Wis Aug 1 delegates to the American Newspaper Guild convention expressed support for Roosevelt and Truman as candidates. The decision was made by a voice vote, signaling clear backing for the two contenders.
President Franklin D Roosevelt and General Douglas MacArthur completed a three day wartime conference at Pearl Harbor outlining renewed Pacific strategy. They pledged to retake the Philippines and press for unconditional surrender of Japan. Roosevelt predicted MacArthur would join the operation, returning to the Philippines with independence as a stated goal. The visit included tours of key military sites damaged since December 7, 1941.
London report states German robots now carry incendiaries. Each flying bomb that hit southern England carried about 20 incendiaries. After a 24 hour lull, drones passed over London and southern counties shortly after daybreak.
