Social Security Act Nears Third Anniversary in Alaska
As the Social Security Act nears its third anniversary on August 14, Alaska has seen wide program activity. Hugh J. Wade of the Social Security Board in Juneau reports 25,000 Alaska workers have applied for old age numbers, 23,280 earned unemployment credits, about 1,000 needy receive public assistance, and health and welfare services expand statewide. The act’s old age program is federal. other programs require territorial action or federal agency administration. By June, 40 single payments totaling 3,141.87 were made to eligible workers or heirs, and federal funds for Alaska reach 189,816.37 for public assistance, 42,269.97 for unemployment administration, and 141,923.12 for health and welfare services. Progress continues with plans and distributions under four health and welfare programs.
