In Marion Indiana on August 8 a mob of about 1,000 seized from the county jail two Black men linked to the fatal shooting of Claude Dexter 23 and the assault of his female companion. Dexter and Mary Ball 18 or 19 were in a car when four men approached. Dexter was fatally wounded and the girl assaulted. The mob dispersed after officers used tear gas and removed the bodies of Thomas Shipp 18 and Abe Smith 19.
