Moscow reports Red Army seizes Sambor 42 miles from Lwow in the Carpathians. Substantial Russian offensives are described as ongoing with multiple army groups involved. Continued on Page Three.

Washington announces Lt Gen John L DeWitt will succeed Lt Gen Lesley J McNair to an undisclosed high command in Europe. He directed mobilization of coastal defenses after Pearl Harbor and evacuation of Japanese nationals from critical areas.

American spearheads near Domfront and Mortain press toward Paris as Allied air power pounds German defenses and Brittany fronts tighten around Brest and Lorient surrenders are questioned.
More than 500 United States heavy bombers attacked two German synthetic oil plants and Liberator formations hit targets over France and the Balkans. Fifteenth Air Force bombers struck at Blechhammer near Breslau while other waves bombed Allbanner near Belgrade and Nova Sad. Edger R Tarwater vice president of the Bank of Alaska in Anchorage died Saturday at Swedish Hospital in Seattle. The body will be sent to his sister in Newbert Tennessee after services in Knoxville. He had long ties to the Alaska Railroad and later entered banking. He also served one term as representative in the Alaska Territories Legislature.
