Prison Break Frustrated at State Penitentiary
In Lansing Kansas on August 7 two prisoners William Webb 39 and Robert Collins 30 were killed during a prison escape attempt. Guard W L Heslop 49 was wounded in the leg while others Eddie Jenkins 37 G O Schultz 35 and Charles Cheapman 27 were captured after using prisoners as shields. The men carried four revolvers smuggled into the prison and struck as they returned from the mine exercise. Dissatisfaction with mining work spurred several past escape attempts.
