Revised figures show the Liege battle as a terrible slaughter with about 8,000 German casualties. Belgian defenders halted a German assault on Fort Barchon near Liege as Belgian guns blasted forts and neighboring structures. German forces abandoned seventeen machine guns as they eventually retreated along the lines.
Belgrade August 6 The Austrians failed to cross the river at Salve. Servian officers say the passage of Austrian troops through Servian territory is impossible. A large Servian regiment crossed the river and raised the Servian flag at Delarme Austria.
Brussels reports several thousand dead and wounded from the Meuse battle at Liege. A Belgian squadron reportedly repulsed six German squadrons. As Germans move wounded to Liege, authorities say repression by German forces includes burning villages and shootings. General von Emich calls Belgians to open roads and refrain from resistance to avert war horrors.
Aug 6 Liege reports a renewed morning battle as the German army presses the fortifications. Two outer Belgian forts were abandoned. The invaders unleash full artillery, with Belgian lancers routing the German cavalry. About a hundred thousand troops drive the attack along Liege’s lines.
