Allied expeditionary forces reported fast advancing flying columns of American armor and infantry sweeping across Brittany toward the Nazi remnants. The rapid drive reached within a few miles of areas around Nazaire and Nantes as remainders of divisions were overwhelmed.
Distressing article notes Nazi advances with robot bombs and new launching platforms, while London remains a shell city. Stalin backs a Free Germany movement with Count von Zeydlitz and von Einsiedel, amid German internal strife between Himmler and Goering and hints of a peace effort.
The Japanese Cabinet has ordered arming the entire population to support a total war effort. A new Supreme War Council was created to manage the crisis amid Allied advances in New Guinea, India, Burma, and the Marianas, as Premier Koiso announced.
Allied dispatch reports Eighth Army troops have occupied suburbs of Florence south of the Arno and push a 25 mile sector, driving defenders back to the river. The enemy declared Florence an open city but blew bridges except Ponte Vecchio as paratroops held the north bank inside city limits.
Ira W. Gabrielson, director of the Fish and Wildlife Service, authorized a four day extension of the fishing season to August 9 due to an unusually heavy pink salmon run in the West. Gabrielson is in Juneau with cannerymen. Frank W. Hynes notes strong escapement and potential expansion of the run to other Alaska districts.
An Alaska Coastal Airlines plane carried Myrtle Sandstrom and Myer Palkovitz to Sitka with M. Page bound for Tenakee and Oscar Bergseth to Chatham. Aug. 5 two U S regiments rush to Philadelphia to break a five day transit strike amid racial tensions. The National Guard mobilizes along with three Pennsylvania Guard regiments to maintain order as the Army prepares to restore bus, trolley, and subway service.
The Associated Press reports a Japanese home radio broadcast claiming raids on Iwo Jima Chichi Jima and Bonin islands. It says enemy task forces formed in the area struck Iwo Jima twice Chichi Jima three times and Bonins six times.
General MacArthur announced that Japan's Second Army is in full retreat from Geelvink Bay in the Vogelkop Peninsula, amounting to nearly a third of New Guinea. Japanese forces are deserting strongholds along a 700 mile coastline as they withdraw southwest to evac survivors in Western New Guinea, with Allied ground air and naval actions pressing the retreat.

Anchorage workers walked off the job after a War Labor Board ruling cut pay for hundreds. Hundreds roamed the city seeking meals as owner operated eateries opened on a limited basis or closed. Bernice Gordon urged workers to stay, while agencies urged Army to open downtown mess halls for the public.
