German panzer forces push a 70 mile deep salient into the Soviet defense between Moscow and Leningrad, creating two vast battles of annihilation. Soviet counterattacks claimed stronger, with 43 bunkers reported captured by Nazis as the Associated Press notes ongoing heavy fighting.
Representative Stephen A Day of Illinois writes a patriotic volume titled We Must Save the Republic. The back cover omits that the publisher has Nazi connections and that the June 15 1941 radio address criticizing Britain was mimeographed by the Columbia Press Service linked to Nazi agent Veireck who earns $1000 monthly.

The House passed a 3.2062 billion tax bill and sent it to the Senate after voting down the joint return provision by 242 to 160, trimming about 323 million from the total. The final passage stood 369 to 30 as the bill advanced.
Chicago August 5 Rail road unions had pressed for wage increases but railroad representatives rejected the demand saying they cannot be afforded. It was estimated any across the board rise would add 900 million dollars annually to operating costs.
