Paris reports a massive engagement northeast of Verdun over Fleury with days of fighting and renewed German attempts to retake Thiamount and Fleury repulsed by artillery duels. Russians claim crossing the Peretsh near Brody and Peniakitch isopady, consolidating positions.
London reports a night bombardment allowed British forces to drive Germans from a newly established second line of defenses on the Somme front for more than a mile. The war office released the statement today.
Petrograd reports Russian forces have captured Rudka and Mirynskai on the Stavok a tributary of the Stokod. The towns lie about nineteen miles east of Kovel the Rus sian objective in the campaign.
Washington Aug 5 W Arsen man head of the Russian trade division says Russian agents are in New York with authority to buy minerals totaling 1 000 000 dollars for public utilities.

London reports British lines near Romant east of Port Said in the Suez Canal zone are under attack today. The War Department says about fourteen thousand Turkish troops are engaged in an eight mile front assault. The Turks have been repulsed so far, but continued heavy fighting could force a British withdrawal if reinforcements arrive.
London Aug 5 decree in Vienna prohibits sale or consumption of all meats including tinned or smoked meats and of poultry and wild game on meatless days. Meatless days will be meatless in reality as exemptions previously allowed partial observance of meat rations.
New York August 6 Staten Island Civic Leader sent a letter to city and state officials asserting that scientists widely believe the infantile paralysis germ is carried by flies.
Aug 9 Colonel William M. Inglis of Seattle, commander of the Washington State National Guard, was made post commander. The post houses over 2,000 men and Inglis’s appointment won widespread approval for his leadership and soldierly qualifications.
Aug 51 Mrs Francis Guy Frink a Seattle society leader and wife of a Washington Iron Works owner with her daughter Gloria and Mrs Betty Umbrecht of Victoria traveled by air over Lake Washington with aviator Howard Hubbard.
Amsterdam August 5 The Frankfurter Zeitung reviews two years of the war saying Germany is a besieged fortress and end hinges on the besiegers. It asserts the fortress will never haul down the flag though enemies may not know it.
Rome reports the Italian government has assumed control of all business concerns financed by Germany. All business relations with Germany have been prohibited.
London reports a decree placing Austrian allies and their property on the same footing as enemies of Austria and Hungary. Germans are not named but their allies face sequestration of subjects and goods. Some German subjects in Italy will be sent to concentration camps or across the Swiss border. German property in Italy is valued at about $150 million, down from $250 million before the war.
Riots erupted in New York as street car workers clashed with strike breakers. Eggs, rotten eyes, tomatoes and cabbage were hurled at salting lines as thousands walked the streets. Extra police have been sworn in and deployed to car barns citywide.
An official dispatch reports the German Crown Prince undertook a 15 minute reconnaissance flight over the Verdun region two days earlier, braving French aircraft and artillery. The move meets strong domestic opposition in Germany and underscores royal risk.

London reports the Russian steamer Eugenia sunk in the North Sea by a torpedo. Three British coastwise steamers were also sunk in the English Channel by submarines. Crews of all four vessels are believed lost.
James Winn known as Slim Jim a Juneau pioneer and first white man to cross the Chilkoot Pass died at his family home at 5 o clock this morning aged 76 He arrived in Juneau in 1882 and spent decades mining and prospecting He is survived by his wife three brothers and a sister with notable nephews Milton Grover John and Burdette Winn Funeral services are set for tomorrow at Odd Fellows Hall conducted by John E Stevens with burial at Evergreen Pioneer Plot.
Senator James Hamilton Lewis denounces Charles E Hughes and the Republican platform over Mexico policy. He blames Republican generals for bloodshed at the border and accuses the party of treasonable actions against the President. He calls for accountability for soldiers killed and condemns opposition to U.S. policy.
Paris reports Yves Guyot former French minister of public works says the next French loan will be floated in September at 5 percent, the same as the last. The French people are confident of its success.
Charles E Hughes departed in the late afternoon for a campaign swing extending to the Pacific Coast states. He planned a stop tomorrow at Niagara Falls as part of his itinerary.
San Francisco Aug 5 A Japanese mine refining company is said to be negotiating a contract to refine the output of one of the largest Australian mines, which formerly went to Belgium.
Stockholm reports ten Zeppelins bombarded the Sveaborg fortress at Helsingfors on the Gulf of Finland. Great damage and casualties said to have occurred as incendiary gas and explosive bombs rained down, with Russian warships defending Petrograd nearby. One Zeppelin reportedly damaged and a Russian battleship damaged as aircraft guns opened fire.
On Aug. 5 German planes from the Dardanelles bombed Lemnos airfield of the Entente Allies. British ships in the harbor drove off the attackers and little damage was believed done.
President and Mrs. Wilson departed late yesterday afternoon for a Chesapeake Bay weekend cruise. They plan to return early Monday morning, proceeding with the midweek schedule after their excursion.
