In San Francisco on August 4, labor leader Harry Bridges fought to keep bail of 25 000 posted as the government moves to revoke it. He declared he is for peace not disloyalty and argued he is not a pacific but against aggression as he testified before a federal judge.
There are too few pink salmon showing in southeast Alaska to warrant an earlier opening than August 15, says Clarence Rhode regional director of the Fish and Wildlife Service. Early notices will be given to the local industry if an opening is considered. Two traps at Pt Adolphus and Pleasant Island are used for tagging, with a 24 hour catch of 500 pinks, while Hill Island trap near Cross Sound yielded 300 salmon yesterday for experimental purposes.
Congressional leaders debated President Truman's request for an additional $4 billion to arm allies. Senator Tom Connally pressed to divert funds from ECA spending while Dewey Short urged bypassing committees. Secretary Acheson defended continued aid as vital to Western Europe, amid clashes over feeding priorities and aid allocations.
Lake Success August 4 Russia urged immediate withdrawal of all foreign troops from Korea and asked the UN Security Council to hear both Koreas. The Soviet plan also invites Red China to join peace talks and warns it will veto the U.S. proposal. Malik said the issue is peace versus war and urged inviting both Koreas to participate.
Washington reports the Army will call out 62 000 enlisted male reservists not in units, from a pool of about 185 000, for 21 months of duty starting September and October. The call includes only enlisted men with quotas set for the Sixty Army area covering California Nevada Utah and other states. This marks the first use of enlisted reserves not in organized reserve corps units.
Seattle report says the Harold A crew feared a 500 pound horned mine aboard their fishing boat. Mine disposal officer H A Ridenour later said the device was harmless after its charge had been soaked. Crewmen admitted they treated it as fully armed and hauled it aboard before disposing it at Westport.
Among Seattleites newly registered at the Baranof Hotel are Charles M. Rhoda N. D. Mac Donald Larry E. Baldwin Martin Anderson R. C. Moller George C. Nickum Hubert Wicklund and John Bettys.
The House voted 112 to 46 to add an anti hoarding provision and scrap the mandatory wage price curb, starting over on an economic control bill. Truman had denounced the bill as inviting a five percent rise, as four days of maneuvering left the measure unsettled and a week end recess followed amid push for standby powers and fair price guidelines.
Princess Louise departs Vancouver for arrival Saturday while Alaska sails from Seattle today. Baranof also from Seattle set for Saturday, with Princess Kathleen and Prince George sailing from Vancouver on Saturday and Tuesday respectively. Princess Norah to depart Vancouver Wednesday. Aleution, westward bound, heads southbound at 7 p.m. Sunday.
Kodiak resident David Henley is listed as a guest at the Baranof Hotel with no further details provided.
In Seattle on August 4, the Alaska Steamship Company faced a likely showdown with CIO Marine Cooks and Stewards Union after stewards refused to sail without assurances against Coast Guard scrutiny of sea papers. The Alaska departure was postponed, Baranof crew may also be delayed, and independent unions offered to fill vacancies.

Precipitation shows 0.15 inches in Juneau in the past 24 hours and totals of 1.02 inches since August 1, 0.74 inches at the airport since August 1, and 7.78 inches since July 1.
Austin E. Lathrop, famed Alaska industrial builder, was mourned at a Seattle service attended by 600. He died July 26 in a Santrana coal mine accident. The ceremony praised his faith, courage, and impact on the Northwest, with tributes from diverse mourners.
Delegate Bartlett of Alaska charged that a few individuals seek personal profit by opposing the statehood bill and mislead the Senate. He blamed organizations and former Interior officials for opposing statehood over a reservations clause and urged fair treatment of native rights while opposing reservation creation.

Aug. 4. The Marines made their first combat area contact in Korea today when Capt. Kenneth Houghton led a probing patrol to 11 armed Koreans on a hill above a Marine position. The Koreans, in seven positions, had two radios and appeared to be observers on a main supply route. Night flashes showed their hilltop posts before a larger Marine relief force arrived to find them gone.
The 27,000-ton aircraft carrier Boxer, under Captain Cameron Briggs, steamed into San Francisco Bay from Korea with land fighter planes for U.S. and UN forces in Southern Korea. She set a record 8 days 7 hours crossing to reach Japan on July 22.
Captain Frank Plichta of Fort Richardson is staying at the Baranof Hotel in what appears to be a routine visit. The report notes his association with Fort Richardson and local lodging arrangements.
President Truman asked Congress for an additional 950 million dollars for naval plane construction and procurement. The request would raise the Navy’s air program to 1.596 billion for the current fiscal year, building toward a proposed 69 Air Force groups as part of expanded production.
AP reports heavy tank and infantry fighting on the Pusan front in Southern Korea. MacArthur says battle began Friday with no letup, North Koreans pushing toward Pusan while US forces launch counter blows. Allied air and sea units target railyards, docks, and supply centers as troops shift sectors and new units enter action.
