Britain broadens crackdown with two prominent Japanese businessmen taken in London. Additional Japanese detained across the empire fuel tense relations as rumors swirl of a London spy ring. Tokyo protests while London denies retaliation for British reporters seized in Japan.
An unconfirmed report from Berlin radio relayed by Exchange Telegraph says all Japanese ships sailing for Great Britain have been ordered to head to Lisbon. In a separate item, U S Commissioner Felix Juay issued a marriage license to Ray Elton Look and Geraldine June Brostrom, both of Eau Claire.
The article reports that a State Department statement condemning Soviet seizures of Lithuania Latvia and Estonia was drafted largely in Hyde Park with Ambassador William Bullitt shaping the wording. The Japanese Government lodged a formal protest with the United States over President Roosevelt s embargo on aviation gasoline to nations outside the Western Hemisphere. Ambassador Kensuke Horinouchi delivered the note to Under Secretary Sumner Welles, Tokyo had called the move an unfriendly act and an effort to pressure Japan.
Milwaukee police halted a $100000 extortion plot with the arrest of Walter Minx aged 23 his brother Kurt 27 and Daniel Carter 28 The youngest confessed to planting a bomb at a Sears Roebuck store July 24 and to sending threatening letters to store manager Rowland Davie promising a much larger bomb The trio planned to escape by a homemade tin submarine found in their basement and to retrieve ransom dropped by airplane.
The van guard of 40,000 soldiers of the Fourth United States Army and National Guard in western states assemble at Yelm Washington for three weeks of war games. The force concentrates at Fort Lewis and Camp Murray as seventy troop trains arrive and motor convoys move in.
SEATTLE Aug 3 International Fishermen and Allied Workers of America protest to Interior Secretary Tekes and Senator Schwellenbach over the Fisheries Bureau’s refusal to extend operation of the lone Southeast Alaska herring plant at Port Walter by Arentson and Sons. The union says five operators were allowed to join, then one plant was continued, despite investments by operators and labor. Also notes naturalization of Alexander Teelmai Kupotf in District Court.
Weather Bureau chief says five day forecasts will replace vague weekly outlooks. In a shift toward precision for local areas, forecasts will aid defense planning and public planning. Experimental for weeks, then public.
Rome reports that Giuseppe Ravegnani, new editor of Corriere Padano, in his first editorial warns that the zero hour for the British Isles is near. He says Italy will join in final attacks against Britain when the hour arrives, following Mussolini's appointing of Balboa's successor.

Tim Davis a Pacific Alaska Airways radio operator on Canyon Island near the Taku River marries Betty Pearce of Seattle in a plane ceremony. U S Commissioner Felx Gray officiates with witnesses R W McCrary and Kenyon McLean. The couple fly back to Juneau aboard pilot Jonn Amundsen.
Mrs Donald W Hagerty and her child are aboard the steamer Columbia traveling from the states where they have been visiting.
Rumors converge as work is slated to begin on an Army airfield at Metlakatla. Major Dale V. Gaffney arrives in Juneau with a survey. Major George Nold to lead construction with Major John P. Dunn and Col Beverly Dunn also expected. About 800 workers to be employed, possibly COC laborers from Pacific Northwest camps, with start within thirty days.
Three members of the House Appropriations Committee plus an Army officer travel by Alaska Clipper to Juneau and Anchorage to survey the Army field project. The party includes Representatives J Buell Snyder of Pennsylvania David D Terry of Arkansas and Francis Case of South Dakota with Lieut Col Sherrill. They plan to transfer to the Coast Guard cutter Haida in Juneau and depart for Seward.
Seattle report says British-born actor Richard Greene passed through Seattle after enlistment officers rejected his offer to join the Canadian Army and told him to return to Hollywood with possible word of an opening later.
A PAA Electra from Fairbanks is due this afternoon in Juneau bringing a full passenger load. Expected on board are A. F. Weinard P. Strand A. Buschmann C. A. Rosto Mrs J. Davin Mrs A. Jewlin Mrs George Dana Miss E. Dana L. Dana and Major Dale V. Gaffney.
British and German air actions intensify with raids across England and Germany. The British War Ministry says invaders were beaten off while raids on Bremen and other targets continue. Hamburg is reported near ruin. RAF losses and Italian casualties noted amid wider Allied offensives in Libya. An Australian troop contingent arrives to bolster defenses.
London reports Prime Minister Winston Churchill warned Britons on August 3 to avoid any relaxation in vigilance or moral sternness in preparations against a German invasion. He urged treating rumors of no invasion with high suspicion and renewed resolve.
A Tangier dispatch reports a British squadron at Gibraltar moving west toward England. The force included three cruisers two aircraft carriers five submarines and seven destroyers as part of defense preparations in the Mediterranean region.
