Calvin Coolidge took the oath at 2:47 AM in Plymouth Vermont, becoming president as Harding dies. He leaves for Washington at 7:30 AM, pledging to carry out Harding policies and seek cooperation from those who aided the late president.
San Francisco dispatch reports brief moments of President Harding’s final hours centered on children. Two young girls brought flowers to the Presidential suite just before 7 p.m., and Mrs. Harding joined them, later bringing some blossoms back to his sick room before his death.
New York Aug 3 President Coolidge may proceed from New York or Washington to meet the funeral train bearing President Harding's body. Exact plans are not finalized.
Calvin Coolidge born Plymouth Vermont July 4 1872 rose through Massachusetts politics to become governor in 1919 and was elected vice president in 1920 with Warren G Harding. Upon oath he automatically became president March 4 1921.
Washington August 3 Cal vin Coolidge is perhaps better equipped by experience to assume the administrative duties at the White House than any predecessor called to that high office by a president's death. Coolidge earned a reputation for forcefulness as Governor of Massachusetts and has attended Cabinet meetings, staying familiar with problems since becoming Vice President.
Governor Scott C. Bone expresses Alaska’s deep grief over President Harding’s sudden death. He recalls Harding’s warmth during his two week Alaska tour, noting his kindness to children and people. Flags are lowered and tributes spread as Alaskans absorb the shock.
A San Francisco to Washington route will haul the President’s body by special train arriving in Washington at 1:30 next Wednesday. Final interment will be in Marion Ohio with the presidential party to accompany the return journey. The train runs direct via Reno Ogden Cheyenne and Omaha and carries a guard of soldiers and sailors. Mrs E M Romsburg joins the party for the west to east trip.
Washington Aug 3 The War and Navy Departments ordered the army and navy to pay last honors to President Harding. The army will announce the death at dawn with guns, 10 o'clock parades, and colors draped for 30 days. Officers in sidearms to wear crepe. The navy to observe similar rites.
King George and Queen Mary sent a condolence to Mrs Harding noting the death of the President at the culmination of a discharged career. The Prince of Wales also sent a message.
SAN FRANCISCO August 5 Miss Ruth Powderly a nurse relieved at last as President Harding’s condition seemed clearly improved. Powderly rose to prominence nursing Mrs Woodrow Wilson and later President Wilson. She cared for Harding through influenza and aided Mrs Harding during her serious illness. She was at the bedside near the time of the President’s death.
