Washington refused Cantu permission to move munitions across the border as Gov Estaban Cantu of Lower California declares open rebellion against the central government. The War Office announced that 60,000 federal troops can be concentrated against Cantu if needed.
The government requested permission to import arms and ammunition from the United States to California for repelling a threatened invasion by Mexican federal troops. Cantu is said to possess many modern rifles and about twenty machine guns, though ammunition is scarce.
From Mexico City Ed uardo Ruiz says a proclamation declares the governorship of the Northern District of Lower California vacant. The Mexican federal government representative announced the action in Los Angeles.
William Lloyd, a Chicago millionaire radical, and nineteen other Communist Party members were found guilty yesterday of conspiracy to overthrow the government by force. Lloyd received five years in prison and a $2000 fine. Max Henacht, former San Francisco reporter, drew five years and a $1000 fine. The remaining defendants received varying terms and fines.
Marion Ohio August 3 Senator Warren G Harding Republican presidential nominee delivered his first front porch speech urging unity across classes and regions. He called for modifying the excess profits tax schedule to meet peace needs and said he would seek prompt congressional action but would not yet propose an equitable substitute.
Indianapolis August 3. United Mine Workers announce the bituminous coal mines of Indiana and Illinois closed last week by a strike are being reopened. The strike was ended by John Lewis of the Mine Workers Union at President Wilson’s request to arrange a joint meeting of operators and miners to adopt a new wage scale if the men return to work.
A restraining order issued by the Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco halts work by Chichagof Mining Co on Over the Hill and Rising Sun mines on Chichagof Island until accounting for ore. The order follows an appeal over ownership, with John V Tuppela declared half owner of Over the Hill and sole owner of Rising Sun.
KETCHIKAN Aug 3 The steamer Princess Mary sailed north at midnight with passengers for Juneau including Jehan Tenny Mrs Mary Tenny Mrs F G Russell Ruth Russell Helen Troy Mrs L T Mather and BD J Williams aboard for the trip to Juneau.
Tim vanguard of the Fourth Army Division now permanently assigned to Camp Lewis arrived in Tacoma yesterday. The First Infantry departed for Fort Lawton Seattle and Vancouver.
From Los Angeles Aug 3 Lieut Olivier Locklear a famed stunt aviator and Lieut Milton Elliott were killed when their plane crashed from a height of 1000 feet. The tragedy was reported from Los Angeles and sent across the latest bulletins.
MARION Ohio Aug 3 Representative William Mason of Illinois a leader in Congress for recognition of the Irish Republic predicted that Irish sympathizers would support the Republican ticket in the National elections and declared the Republicans would carry Illinois by 200000 votes.
Six masked gunmen robbed the Commercial Savings Bank of Moline moss of about 20 000 dollars in Davenport, escaping by car after a gun battle with police. Charles Mohler was shot and possibly fatally wounded in the exchange.
New York reports that starting October 16 the State at Buffalo will administer free radium treatment for cancer to any U S citizen affected by the disease. The announcement was made today and broad access is promised.

PRINCE GEORGE Aug 3 Three of the four army planes making up the Alaskan squadron from Mineola to Nome arrived here from Jasper Capt St Clair Street commander and pilot of the fourth plane was forced to return to Jasper after the hop off but arrived later in the day He damaged his plane again while landing and may discontinue the flight temporarily The remaining three likely will hop off for Hazleton late today or tomorrow morning
Daytona guardsmen were called out to face about 300 Bahama negroes angry over the death of Herbert Brooks, a native mover who allegedly assaulted a white woman. Brooks reportedly died after leaping from a train near Jacksonville while in custody.
Five trainmen were injured when the Oriental Limited of the Great Northern Railroad derailed near Wilson Creek yesterday. No passengers were hurt.

Soviet troops crush Polish resistance and push toward Warsaw with Brest Litovsk fallen as armistice talks stall. A provisional Soviet government reportedly forms in parts of Poland while Polish forces falter on a 120 mile front. Americans in Poland warned to stay put amid advancing Bolsheviks.
In Mare Island California Aug 5, 1 000+ sailors clerks and mechanics with over thirty years service face losing pensions after a Civil Service Retirement bill set ages 70 for clerks and 65 for mechanics, the fate tied to a classified insertion. An executive order via the Civil Service Commission is suggested to rectify the move.
Tokio Aug 3 The Ninth Jap anese Squadron of destroyers rescued 23 passengers and five crew members from the wreck of the Russian ship Commodore Behring. The remaining 31 crew members are believed to have landed safely before the squadron arrived and are guarding the cargo. The ship was stranded off Kamchatka's southern extremity while bound from Vladivostok to Petrograd.
