Belgian gunboat Netta commanded by Lieut Lenaerts engaged the German Graf Von Gotzen off Lake Tanganyika. After a brief battle the Graf Von Gotzen was sunk with unknown crew fate, while Netta sustained no losses and dispersed the enemy troops.
Steamer Alaska sails this afternoon with 75 passengers for the north including Mrs. Leroy Johnson Thomas Smith C. J. Bledsoe Layton Johnson W Vakulovich J C Tildsey Mrs G L Ball and Miss TL Hall. Humboldt departs tonight with 30 passengers for the north, plus five steerage tickets sold for Juneau to names such as Mrs Hellenthal Gertrude Hellenthal Mrs Hazel Haho Florence Casey Mrs T C Stodjlard To Afagkoeff M Bezeroff George Bezeroff Peter Bezeroff and Mrs F J Weltrick.
British steamship Britianie was torpedoed this morning off the north coast and sunk. The vessel was unarmed and the crew was saved. The attack occurred as tensions rise in the theater of war.
Fred J. Hawley and wife, parents of ten month twin boys, adopt Mary and Margaret Ericson, six month old twins whose mother died recently in Seattle on August 2.
In Seattle two dynamiters wrecked the home of J. M. Jarvis, timber inspector for the Alaska Engineering Commission. Jarvis, who had a recent dispute with a man described as an I W W advocate, escaped unharmed. Police believe the blast was set in the basement. no clues yet, though Jarvis provided descriptions of several men near the north.
Washington August 3 Dissension among Republican Senators over recognizing progressives on the Republican campaign committee. Several Senators told Hughes they will not take orders from progressive members in their own states. The candidate assured he will recognize regular Republican leaders as well as the progressive campaign member in each state represented.
Mexico City reports a peace commission designated to travel to the United States. The group led by Louis Cabera Ignacio Bouillas and Alberto Pani aims to establish permanent peace and secure financial aid with no military representative aboard as a diplomatic courtesy.
New Orleans reports General Carranza is said to have received a loan of $100,000 from Japanese interests in recent days. The arrangement would grant exclusive fishing rights along the west coast for five to ten years and permit permanent settlements at strategic points along the Hearne.
Sir Roger Casement was executed by hanging at Pentonville Prison in London at nine o'clock after being convicted of high treason. He declared I die for Ireland as Father Casey supported him, and reporters noted his calm demeanor before the cap and trap were sprung.
Washington Aug. The child Labor bill would ban products made by under fourteen or by workers in mills or factories more than eight hours daily from interstate commerce. It has slim chances in the Senate, despite President Wilson urging southern lawmakers. Senator Smith of Georgia vows to filibuster if needed. Senate leaders foresee the measure being postponed or sidelined.
New York price listing shows Alaska Gold closing at 17 percent and Alaska-Jimenw at 7 percent with copper at 2a tt. The Empire offers premier printing services for fine work.
Washington Aug 3 William J Kimber commissioner of the Federal Board of Mediation and Conciliation was summoned to the White House by the President for talks on the threatened nationwide railroad strike. He said the conference would continue with discussions in New York later tonight with representatives of both sides.
Aug 2 Newport News reports say the Deutschland eluded British and French warships off the Virginia Capes. The submarine was near Fortress Monroe at night and vanished by morning with no trace found. Additional dispatches note insurers seldom demand 30 to 100 percent premiums on submarine cargo, while Copenhagen reports Germany says Deutschland carries food to England and should be spared if captured rather than destroyed.
Seattle Aug 3 Government boat Swinomish led officials through the new canal locks at 11:15 am marking the first passage for pleasure craft. Thousands watched from shores as autos carried crowds to witness the formal opening amid civic and federal participation.
London Aug. 3 The Times reports one Zeppelin destroyed in the North Sea by a new British high angle gun after a fifth raid on the English coast. The Admiralty cites a large enemy air fleet in the raid with at least seven zeppelins and about twenty smaller craft. Weather was hazy. bombs fell but reported damage was limited.
Seattle Aug 2 Harry Crafton motorman on the old Renton line was pinned beneath a car for two hours after a collision with a runaway freight car near the hill at Columbia City. The freight car was smashed to splinters and Crafton escaped with only minor injuries.
Senator Chas A. Sulzer drew the largest Nome audience yet for a political meeting, with two hours of discussion on Alaska issues. George B. Grigsby and others pledged support, while Wickersham’s role faced sharp critique and Sulzer’s bid gained strong momentum for the Fourth Division campaign push.
Word from Juneau indicates warm politicking in the Tanana valley during the closing days of the campaign. Wickerham may enter the Fourth District week of campaigning, as he did two years ago, to confront George B. Grigsby, the Democratic nominee for Attorney General, or Grigsby may pursue him.
In Rome on August 3, Etna and Stromboli erupt violently, forcing residents to flee. Lava pours into nearby sea as officials warned adjacent territory to move at signs of activity. Government has monitored for weeks.
In Indianapolis on August 7 the nationwide Progressives met with 200 delegates to judge the advisability of calling another convention after disapproving of the National committee’s Hughes endorsement. The group, slow to act, may adjourn without decision today.
Aug 3 Chicago officials announce Cook County first forest preserve purchase Deer Grove in Palatine about 1000 acres. The acquisition marks a major expansion of parkland joining Grant Humboldt Garfield and Washington parks in size and scope.
Berlin Aug 2 German people are calling for peace but censorship keeps their cry from the Allied governments. Max Millian Harden in Die Zukunft argues the foe is Masten Ing and the voice of the German people cannot be heard, warning peace could be near if heard.
Middleboro Kentucky reports a cloudburst over Binks Creek Tennessee caused the drowning of about 20 men and women. Heavy property damage followed as relief was dispatched from the area after a hot sultry morning turned to sudden rain and flooding.
Petrograd reports Teutons evacuating Kovel with Lemberg likely to follow as gas and rifle fire exact heavy losses. In Caucasus, Turkish forces driven back near Nurik after assault on Euphrates line. London dispatch notes French and British consolidating gains in Somme, trenches reopening as communications improve.
Steamers bound north include Prince Rupert arriving at midnight and City of Seattle due Saturday morning with three days mail. Al-Ki heads north expected Monday, Alaska sails north this afternoon with two days mail due Sunday. Humboldt Alameda Princess Alice Admiral Farragut sail Seattle times, Prince George Spokane Jefferson Northwestern to depart Seattle on various dates. Southbound Admiral Watson sails tonight, Mariposa due southbound next Tuesday.
