Boat search cancelled after distress call mix up
A Seattle based search for the 140 foot Western Trader with 10 crewmen and five passengers was halted after Vancouver officials learned the ship was not in distress. The distress call had referred to the gillnetter Greer Starrett aground off Cape Caution on the British Columbia coast. The Western Trader stood by Greer Starrett through the night but mornings discovery showed the smaller craft had sunk or drifted away. Survivors from Greer Starrett were taken to Cascade, British Columbia.

Over 700 entrants fished the three day derby ending Saturday. awards announced at a Derby Dance in the Elks Ballroom. Henry of Seattle was 1948 winner, Dick Harris of Juneau top 1947. Weather improved, about 500 on the water. prizes include a maroon 1949 Ford for first salmon erasure.
