Miami reports optimism fades as search for the Hawaii Clipper ends day four with no wreckage found. Philippine experts still think the 26 ton flying boat may be afloat, noting an oil patch could be fuel dumping.
Attorney General James S. Truitt and District Attorney Joe Kehoe prosecuted about 150 alien fishermen in Bristol Bay under territorial law. More than half were convicted with fines totaling roughly 15 000 to 16 000 dollars. typical penalties were 200 dollar fines and 30 day jail terms suspended on payment. Most convicted were outside fishermen, including Italians and Finns from San Francisco, with canneries warned to avoid future aliens. AVENAL California Aug. 1 Two women were killed and Pilot William Downs injured perhaps critically when a plane went into a tail spin over Avenal Airport and crashed from an altitude of 300 feet. The dead are Mrs. Thomas Hutchinson and Mrs Fay Downs both Avenal aviatrixes. Witnesses said the plane appeared to have motor trouble as it approached the airport.
In the Pacific near Yakutat a Whitish lump was recovered aboard the Norland by Carl Swanson and crew. Tests hint ambergris, a whale secret, worth up to 100 dollars per ounce, with a seven pound two ounce piece sent to the University of Washington for analysis. The Norland crew from Juneau share the potential riches as 21,000 pounds of halibut sold for about 1400 dollars. A guest, Miss Helen Bodwell, visits Dr. Worley in Juneau aboard the Princess Charlotte.

Discovery of chromite ore reported by J. C. Boehm in the Ketchikan mining precinct. Harrisburg, Pa. Aug. 1. Judge Paul Schaeffer ruled that the Pennsylvania legislature cannot suspend the grand jury investigation into political graft and corruption charges against Gov. George H. Earle and 13 other top state Democrats. The legislature had recently passed and the governor signed a bill to shift the inquiry to a Legislative Committee. The case centers on accusations tied to Pennsylvania spring primary politics.

Treasury Department said the J. B. Warrack Company of Juneau submitted a bid of 18900 for construction of a retaining wall at the federal building in Ketchikan. Other bidders were Enterprise Machine Works of Ketchikan for 28591 and Wright and Stock of Seattle for 30879.
