Shushana proclaimed Alaska's richest strike with reports from McCarthy and Metarthy. News says Wilson creek near Shishana district yields a vast gold diggings area of fifteen square miles. Muller and Bone urge government trail improvements from the railroad end to the new diggings.
A dock gathering bid farewell to defense witnesses traveling south for the MacDonald case. On the Princess May, J. D. Carroll and wife, R. J. Willis, H. H. Sterling, A. N. Church, and Fred Burns joined hands with locals and sang Auld Lang Syne. Carroll heads home to Seattle, Willis to a Goldendale store, Sterling to Montana, Church to Providence Rhode Island.
The General Land Office reversed a local decision on a Katalla coal claim near the Cunningham group. It holds that the work done did not prove a commercially opened mine, blocking patenting in the Bering River fields. Richly developed yet non shafted claims and shallow openings are both barred under the ruling.
The Cordova under Captain Thomas Moore arrived in Juneau with 150000 feet of lumber for Juneau and buildings, plus 50 tons of bar steel for C W Young. It also carried 140000 feet of lumber and wood pipe for Sheep Creek. After unloading at Sheep Creek the Cordova will sail westward via Excursion Inlet Dundas Cordoba Valdez and LaTouche, and southbound will carry 3000 tons of copper ore from Ellamar and LaTonche mines.
S P Murphy arrested by Capt. Martin for carrying concealed weapons was fined ten dollars by Municipal Magistrate W T Lucas and the sentence suspended.
Joe Miller chief proprietor in Juneau for fifteen years closes out stock and retires. He leases his Front Street shop near Franklin to Heidelberg Liquor Company and plans possession within a month. To speed sales he offers bargains aimed at moving stock before vacating the premises.
Exhaustion of Juneau's high grade gasoline forced the Empire to use inferior fuel which delayed the linotype machine all afternoon. The Dispatch linotype set the last type for today after Empire press time, causing the Empire to be late to night.
Agent W E Nowell of the Alaska Steamship Company has sold about twenty tickets to Cordova aboard the Mariposa. Most passengers say they are bound for the latest excitement and a number of stamped era to Shushima are aboard. The ship will connect with the Copper River and Northwestern railroad tomorrow.
Emery Valentine appeared in district court and was arraigned on assault with a dangerous weapon. He waived time and entered a plea of not guilty, with Counsel J. H. Cobb present.
A district court injunction suit filed this afternoon names C6 Grafton Coleman T L Johnson Ray Noland Sam Svindseth and Geo Groteva. J B Marshall is the title of the suit. A restraining order to prevent Court Commissioner J B Marshall from collecting poll tax is requested. A B Callaham is attorney for plaintiffs.
Miss Ethel Chambers and Miss Ben Hero, teachers in the Juneau public school, have tendered their resignations. The school board has already employed new teachers to take the places made vacant.
The Georgia will depart Skagway for the first trip after August 6 at a new earlier hour. Thereafter the Georgia will sail from Juneau at 6:00 AM instead of the previous time.
Washington reports another diplomatic note from Japan to the United States regarding California land legislation. The note continues ongoing exchanges over treaty and territorial policy.
Secretary of the Navy Daniela urged開 Alaska opening during her term, highlighting Alaska as more than ice and snow. She touted 60,000,000 acres of arable land and potential for wheat, barley, oats, fruits, and agricultural development. She stressed Alaska’s vast area vs population and urged American effort to harness its resources.
John Purroy Mitchel, recently named collector of customs for the port of New York, was nominated by a 107 member fusion committee of independent Democrats, Republicans and Progressives as the anti Tammany candidate for mayor. He is expected to win support from major New York dailies and from administration Democrats including Governor Sulzer. The effort aims to oust Tammany from power across city departments.
The Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company plans an aggressive push into Alaska, building high power wireless stations at Nome Dutch Harbor Juneau and Ketchikan and cutting tolls from 20 to five cents per word with no distance limit. The change takes effect September 1. The move follows a statement by Commercial Superintendent Irwin in Juneau during the Alaska excursion of the New Seattle Chamber of Commerce. The Pacific Coast office was moved from San Francisco to Seattle to support the campaign.

Washington July 31 Gen W H Bixby head of the engineer corps of the United States army will retire August 11 and be succeeded by Col William T Russell. The retirement of Gen Bixby is at his own request.
Jewels valued at more than $100,000 were stolen from Mrs. J. H. Han an who is spending the summer here. The loss was reported yesterday. Mrs. Brotherton and two sons left for the South on the Princess May today. E. C. Driggs took passage on the Princess May for Seattle.
Honduras will seek a United States protectorate similar to Cuba with support from President Wilson. Secretary Bryan proposed a plan to Nicaragua and now Honduras indicates it will request protection in a representative, good faith manner to ensure peace and stable government.
In Pittsburg, Dr. W. J. Hollard of the Carnegie Museum requests Honus Wagner’s uniform and glove upon his retirement so they may join museum exhibits. The Princess May carried numerous Juneau passengers including Ray B. Christ, C. T. Heaven, A. A. Krausey, and others, with Herbert W. Myers noted as a Southbound traveler.
London July 1 The Daily Telegraph Salonica correspondent says a parliamentary commission reports Bulgarian atrocities with hundreds of charred bodies of old men women and children 4000 houses burned 20000 homeless. Victims list includes mutilated Greek peasants near Lesnita and a woman with legs cut off and a bayonet through a six month old infant nearby. In Thrace the Bulgars destroyed Sofia dragging away over 100 young women. Sofia July 31 Sofia besieged Gen Nelson Miles and several Europeans are unable to leave. Surgeon Major Clyde Ford is in Sofia.
New York reports say Americans in Mexico were stirred by a speech by the Japanese minister to Mexico. He spoke of a strong bond of sympathy between Mexico and Japan due to both nations facing difficulties with the United States. Over 5,000 attended the reception. translation may have caused a misreport under investigation by the American chargé d'affaires.
President Wilson reiterates opposition to recognizing Huerta's government in Mexico and remains firm that Huerta lacks legitimacy. Secretary Bryan seeks congressional approval for a $1000000 aid appropriation to assist Americans in Mexico.
Ty Cobb, famed American baseball star recently re-instated for the second time this year, called on President Woodrow Wilson in Washington. The President warmly greeted Cobb, who is known to have relatives in Georgia.
New York World correspondents in Mexico City report anti American demonstrations attributed to President Huerta. They claim he planned pro Japanese shows to pressure the United States during a possible war with Japan. Army and navy officers counter that Mexico need not be feared and would stay neutral in such a war.

In Cincinnati on August 1 two dead six dying and eleven injured after Oolin Johnson of Salt Lake crashed a motorcycle into an electric pole causing an explosion at the Motordome. Eight victims later confirmed dead, two more dying and twenty five injured.
