A late message from the Homeric reports 48 lives lost as the Japanese freighter Raifuku Maru sank south of Halifax while two steamers and two ocean tugs sped to aid. Rescue efforts were hindered by mountainous seas and the lifeboats' inability to survive.
Astoria Ore April 21 Raifuku has visited this port many times according to shipping records noting its repeated calls and harbor activity.
Seattle reports Lee Waite former city ambulance driver arrested with Charles Pearl on suspicion of a hold up plot at Frederick and Nelson workers. Thomas Swift Piggy Wiggly manager identifies Waite as the robber who confronted him with a pistol and took 1000 dollars last March. Waite received a suspended sentence by Judge Boyd Tallman, who was later defeated for re election. Waite had prior conviction for holding up a Chinese game.
The trustees of the Metropolitan Museum of Art declined to accept the $3,000,000 art collection left by William A. Clark because it could not be housed as a unit within the museum. The collection will go to the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D. C.
Seattle April 21 Japanese trade official M Watananabe visiting Seattle said the Japan Russia trade treaty has increased Siberian pine imports but not cut demand for American woods He plans to tour Alaska during his official visit focusing on lumbering industries and trade prospects.
Former Field Marshal von Hindenburg, a presidential candidate, told the Associated Press that the Dawes reparation plan cannot be fulfilled unless former enemies show political and economic loyalty. He said universal guarantees and a moral policy by all nations are unlikely, and hopes for wiser nationwide policies in old age.
Seattle April 21. E G Mc Micken Passenger Traffic Manager of the Pacific Steamship company on his return from a tour of the Coast Cuba and the Atlantic seaboard predicted that transportation companies operating in the coast wise and Alaska passenger service will be taxed to capacity this summer.
Representative Sheldon’s resolution endorsing President Coolidge’s appointment of George A. In Sofia on April 21 A Ninkoff sub chief of the Communist Executive General Committee who planted a bomb at Svets Kral Cathedral killing 160 was cornered by police and killed. Yankhoff head of the plot allegedly held for nine hours, barricaded in a cellar before bombs ran out and surrender refused. Kodjeroff an accomplice was also killed after authorities bombed the house. Bulgaria asks Allied Council to add 10000 militia members.
New York April 21 The Associated Press members at a preliminary meeting endorsed authorizing directors to permit restricted broadcasting of outstanding events with safeguards ahead of the annual meeting.
Melville E. Stone addressed the annual Associated Press luncheon in New York, praising the press as a great and useful institution valued for American theory and government. He asserted confidence that American theory and government remain the best ever devised and urged no challenge to that belief.
