Government outlines tentative tax schedules for 1925 27 with higher rates for mining incomes over 500 000 and increased 50 percent trap tax. Base 15 cent per case on king red and sockeye salmon with no levy for packs under 25 000. Hearings planned for ten days before adoption in the House.
In Peking on April 2 the funeral for Dr Sun Yat Sen proceeded with a casket from Moscow that critics call a shoddy bronze crystal affair. The rites were described as a throw back to Manchu customs, failing to honor his wish for a Lenin inspired burial.
Wrangell reports a two line salmon cannery at Lake Bay burned this morning causing a loss over 154000 dollars. The Jefferson steamer carried the crew leaving Seattle for the season. The plant, owned by F. C. Barnes and Company of Portland, planned a pack of 509000 cases this season.
Seattle April 2 The plan of M G Johansen founder and manager of the Millionaire Club is charged in a complaint by Ierbert Rohrbach a contractor to Prosecutor Calvin Rohrbach He says he answered an ad for a contracting partner claiming a wrecking job and sewer trench digging Labor costs 4 to 5 dollars a day but the men receive 65 cents daily for meals and 20 cents for lodging The organizer admits business men gave 15000 last year for support saying he must help himself and his family along with the unfortunates.
L. Co. White of Massachusetts has been appointed superintendent of federal prisons. He replaces Heber H. Wotan who resigned. White has served as purchasing agent for the Atlanta prison and takes over the post left by the late president’s brother-in-law.
Frank J. Erwin of New York, national commander of the Disabled Veterans, declared last night that a campaign is underway to clean out the Central Office in Washington. He spoke during a public address outlining reform goals for the Veterans Bureau.
Miss Anna Swanepoel of Lichtenburg, aged 35, has reportedly remained in a trance since 1910 after learning of her fiance's sudden death. English scientists may travel to Beitfontein to study the case as doctors note she has not been fully conscious in 15 years. She has received care at home and later in a hospital with food and water given every two hours.
San Francisco April 2 At the Dorothy Ellingson sanity hearing her counsel Alexander Mosslin said prenatal influence will be shown in testimony about the abnormality of her mother shortly before the girl's birth He claimed the father awoke to his wife's clutch on his throat as she attempted to kill him The mother then fainted Dorothy testified fainting twice Dorothys father Joseph Ellingson testified about her being picked up by a soldier and a sailor at age 12 and staying away overnight He said Dorothy attended Sunday School but her mother never went to church after marriage and that the family never whipped her yet she would become angry and yell when reprimanded.
Washington April 2 Failure of France to propose funding the war debt has revived the agitation here for an affirmative step and the belief is expressed that a formal note will soon ask all debtor nations to submit funding plans.
Seven deputy collectors of Internal Revenue indicted for extorting money from businessmen in Westchester and Bronx Counties have been suspended from offices. The indictments were announced in New York on April 2.
Senate Bill No 20 proposed by Senator Dimond would grant jury trials in Alaska Territory contempt of court cases not committed in presence of the court. The measure is one of several Dimond bills including a plan to cut the eagle bounty to 50 cents. The House already defeated a Nylen substitute repealing the bounty. The Dimond bill also contemplates amendments to the Territorial sales tax law with two new sections.
Admiral Robinson told a Chamber of Commerce luncheon that the battleship remains king of the sea and that the navy must stay strong. He warned there is no panacea for war, and emphasized the United States needs a powerful fleet. Near Admiral Hughes was ordered to return to Washington to discuss maneuvers with President Coolidge and Secretary Wilbur.

Holbrook Arizona April 2 chief chemist C Lind of the Federal Bureau of Mines informs Great Western Oil Company that a test well is receiving a large gas flow containing sufficient helium to recover profitably.
Read and Company disclosed the Dodge Brothers Motor Company sold for just under 175060 dollars. Prince Rupert reported March halibut landings at 3810800 pounds and current prices at nine dollars and three cents per unit.

Visalia California April 2 Secretary of Interior Work told an audience that the Government should withdraw from reclamation services as far as possible and leave projects to states and districts capable of borrowing from the government at low interest. He called reclamation a losing proposition noting that out of 28 projects four failed and one in California defaulted on installments.
Bishop William Lawrence of the Massachusetts diocese told a joint Senate and House session in Boston that Senator Lodge refused to back the President's veto of the Veterans' adjustment bill because of the promise of a great constituency.

Hartford April 2 Gerald Chapman the notorious crim inal took the stand in his own defense on the murder charge in the killing of Police man James Skelly of New Britain Conn on October 12 He spoke rapidly but was urged to raise his voice He denied being in the store of Skelly and discussed his criminal career with Prosecutor Alcorn He said he shot at a policeman in Munice Ind because he believed the officer was a hold up man and he had 4700 on him
Customs collectors boarded the private car of Geraldine Farrar en route from Montreal to Rutland Vermont and seized 40 bottles of champagne whiskies and beer. The singer was not disturbed and continued to Rutland to perform tonight.
