President Harlan Updegraff, long a U S education reformer, voices public support for youth led readjustments in religion and schooling. In Mount Vernon he says youths can think for themselves due to early primary schooling. He describes the goal of the educational system as developing initiative to meet new situations.
W A A athletes devote long hours to tennis and hockey practice. Tests on technique and rules will determine points, aiming to raise hockey standards and deepen game knowledge. Sports chair and four captains design test work and team placement to boost teamwork and efficiency.
More than thirty students answered the call for Cornellian reporters and are trying out for staff positions. Trials will continue at least two weeks as a thorough evaluation precedes the permanent staff selection. Report to The Cornellian office in Main Hall basement by 2 p.m. Monday. assignments posted at 1 p.m. Monday.
A change of subject was made in final negotiations for the Cambridge University debate. The topic became Prohibition with Cornell arguing the affirmative. The English team arrives November 17 after a September 19 landing and travels to debate at several American colleges.
The freshmen class officers election will be held Tuesday October 6 at 6 40 p m in upper chapel replacing the previous Monday date. Three tickets with two men and two women each will be presented. Floor nominations are in order as tickets remain tentative. the class will decide if officers serve for a semester or the year.
Seven speakers at Y. W. meeting spelled CORNELL and discussed topics Christianity Opportunity Reach New Vision Enthusiasm Loyalty Leader ship. Speakers Hu bert a Clemans Hazel Keefer Nell Thomas Marjorie Niehaus Myrna Cole Helen McCleery Florence Shomberg emphasized broadmindedness as vital in college life and urged Cornell girls to uphold standards aiding the college’s American ideal of Christian character.
The orchestra members elected their officers Saturday morning. Ralph Young was voted president, Leo Gennung secretary and treasurer, Frank Endicott and Paul Lubben librarians. A large group of new players are on probation with no selections yet to fill vacancies.
Suzanne Keener coloratura soprano and Metropolitan Opera star opens the Cornell Conservatory of Music Artist Course with a concert on October 6. Born in a Pennsylvania town, she was discovered during a Liberty Loan drive and soon signed to a five year Metro contract. Critics praise her clear high tones and dramatic presence.
Election season axes on campus as juniors chose officers led by Donald Typer for president. Lois Grant, Helen Bieber, and Clayton Burgardt were named vice president secretary and treasurer respectively. Seniors head to polls Monday in Main Hall from 1 to 4 pm with candidates including Robert Bell Walter Gray Herbert Hulse for president and other officers listed.
Professor N A Himes, debate coach, travels to Chicago for a Midwest Debating Coaches conference. The gathering Saturday will select topics for the coming debating season.
Four men selected at last Tuesday’s tryouts to assist Debs Lake in controlling Cornell rooters at contests this year. Named are Ernest Storer, Jack Orr, Ray Wetherby and Kermit Weise. Storer is a junior. the others are freshmen. The plan alternates the four at each contest to build an efficient yell leader corps for the future.
The big pep meeting starts at 7:30 in the chapel to ready students for the opening gridiron game. Coach Dick Barker and Harold Baltz speak with Chip's Collegians providing musical interludes. A small admission is charged to cover expenses. seating follows class groups for event umpiring.
Mount Vernon town council approved two ordinances to take effect immediately making First Street an arterial highway and raising the speed limit from fifteen to twenty miles per hour. Motorists must stop before entering First Street with penalties up to 100 dollars or thirty days in jail. fines for speed violations rise to 25 dollars plus costs and up to five days in jail.
The 1925 Midwest conference grid season kicks off with Coe versus Monmouth in Illinois as the lone regular conference tilt of the opening weekend. Carleton meets Luther while Beloit faces Northwestern U and Notre Dame looms for Beloit in later clashes. Knox looks ahead to a long trip and Army game at West Point on October 10, with several teams set for action through the weekend.
Grinnell invaders known as the Scarlet and Black Invaders clash with Cornell at Ash Park at 2:30 for the 1925 season opener. Grinnell aims to end Cornell’s three game winning streak, relying on experience and strong backfield duo Hap Moran and Captain Sweet to lead a well built line.
Rain again postpones the Frosh Soph tug of war at Ink's pond with no new time set. Ducking arrangements are ready and will be announced at chapel on the first suitable day. Sophomores warn freshmen the delay cannot last forever.
Faculty and students at the YMCA discussed the fate of campus societies. They argued that outside groups now handle religious, intellectual, and social activities, and that societies have become artificial and nonfunctional as literary bodies.
Students who failed to reserve seats for the Artist Course may obtain student privilege tickets at McKay's drug store where the seat sale will begin tomorrow morning.
